I think the F1 chiefs would be happy if he walked away to be honest. He's too political for them, and there's too much new money coming from the Middle East. They won't want him upsetting the gravy train.This is a story that has not fully played out yet:

I think F1 needs Hamilton to return, a lot more than Hamilton needs F1 right now.
I hope this is just Hamilton exerting some leverage, but I would understand if he was ready to walk away after the fiasco at last year's final race.
If Hamilton does walk away under these circumstance, it will be a black eye on the sport - which is a shame, given its recent growth in popularity. I don't know what the FIA need to do to satisfy Hamilton, but it should probably start by dropping threats to punish him for not showing up to the awards ceremony. There probably needs to be an acknowledgement that the rules were not followed properly in Abu Dhabi, and that steps will be taken to ensure that does not happen again.
