Always Hoddle. I had grown up with him since my first memories, it never even occurred to me he could play for another team, I just thought it was written somewhere like a football rule.

Robson is owned by Man U, Dalgleish is owned by Liverpool, Hoddle is owned by Tottenham.

It was shattering.

Exactly same. Hoddle was my hero growing up and at the game against Oxford when he ran the ball past 2 defenders on the halfway and rounded the keeper to slot home, he kisses goodbye to the Spurs faithful, I was very emotional. It hurt.

Clemence retired and Clive Allen was sold to Bordeaux that same summer if I remember correctly.

VDV stung a lot, but Bale was the worst for me, I've never idolised a footballer so much. Still fucking pissed off about Mourinho's use of him when he came back.

I was sad when Gascoigne left, as I was a little boy, sad (but not as much) when Lineker left, sad when Klinsmann left… irritated when Sheringham left….

But Campbell… game changer. My heart sank when I heard it over the radio and I despised that man and move, during the Summer between university years.

Never been upset over a player leaving since. Been annoyed that players leaving would dent our progress after, but Campbell was the watershed moment for me and attachment to players. Although Ledley King is the only player I’ve allowed myself to like since. Other players, I merely appreciate as footballers.

Nicky Barmby and Sheringham - As a young kid those two were my hero's and when they left (albeit not at the same time) it hurt the most. After that, none of the other sales hit me the same. Campbell and Carr leaving were probably the only other two. When we lost the likes of Carrick, Berbatov and Keane I was older and less attached.

Edgar Davids hurt me was my footballing idol I pissed my pants with excitement when he signed and when he left I was broken.

Bale is an obvious one, even more so because of the welsh connection.

kane last season if he had gone I think would have finished my love off for top level football.

Alli also in January hurt a lot I just felt like he was a kid with problems and we needed to help him. Lamela going as well was hard, along with super Jan.

But the worst one of the lot for me was Modric he was just such a good player I loved the Croatian connection I was even sad when Kranjcar left!

Modric, VDV, Bale, Corluka and Kranjcar. As a Croatian the transfers of Corluka, Kranjcar and Modric were very painful. For some reason the most painful was actually Corluka as I knew that him and Luka were best buddies at that time and it felt to me like the first step that will make Luka leave for sure, and when he did I actually felt relieved that it's not to a direct competitor in the league. VDV, Kranjcar and Modric were just pure class to watch together, the magic they oozed out on some occasions would make anyone fall in love with football.

After that the transfer of Bale felt to me like we lost the last magical player for many years to come. Even though we invested the money very well and built a good squad after that I still missed that magic that I felt with those players before.

It just so happened that I also moved to China couple of months after the Bale transfer and due to time difference etc was for many years not active anymore also with SC, I just watched the highlights or when I was visiting Europe again some live games on TV. So for me it felt like those transfers really made me lose a lot of engagement with the club and game in general, starting with the Corluka transfer and the Bale sale being the final nail in the coffin.

For me, the one that really stands out is Defoe to Portsmouth on deadline day in 2008. Didn't expect it at all and was gutted waking up hearing about it. Was chuffed when he came back a year later
