Post Brexit, clubs will not be able to sign players freely from the EU. (Thread ahead)

Players from EU countries who want to play in the Premier League or EFL will be required to gain a GBE, like all other overseas players without the right to work in the UK. The GBE will operate a points-based system, where points are scored for senior and talented young players.

They will be based on: 1) Senior and youth international appearances. 2) Quality of the selling club, based on the league they are in, league position and progression in continental competition. 3) Club appearances, based on domestic league and continental competition minutes.

Players accumulating the requisite amount of points will earn a GBE (Governing Body Endorsement) automatically, while players just below the threshold may be considered for a GBE by an Exceptions Panel.

In the Premier League, the number of overseas U21 players a club can sign will be limited to 3 in the January transfer window and 6 per season moving forwards. The UK’s exit from the EU will also mean that clubs will not be able to sign players from overseas until they are 18.

I doubt it'll have much of an impact on signings in the PL.

Might give the odd extra home grown player a chance, tbh.

That will be a big change. If you sign them at 18, the only way to get them club trained is to not loan them out.

This feels the most significant thing to come out of that. Everything else was more or less expected.

"Points will be awarded for senior and youth international appearances, club appearances and the pedigree of the selling club."

Pedigree of the selling club , that's open to interpretation and also no mention of speaking English which seems to apply to most others coming to work here from 2021 under new immigration rules.

I am not bothered if a footballer can't speak English but then I am not bothered if the man picking carrots in a field to put food on my table can't speak English either.

RIP Vitesse Arnhem.

What will Chelsea do with all these talented players that they've been hoarding for all these years?

When I first heard this I thought it was big news - but thinking about it, the only real PL great I can think of that came to England from overseas before his 18th birthday was Cesc Fabregas. Cristiano Ronaldo had just turned 18 a few months before. Other than that it's pretty rare TBH and usually only happens if the player's family has already immigrated to the UK anyway.

Only foreign born player to come through our academy into the first team that I can think of lately is Nabil Bentaleb? Actually I guess if Irish players now fall under this ruling then we couldn't have signed Troy Parrott...

Would be interesting to see a list of the 10 top players who wouldn’t have been able to move had these restrictions been in place previously. Come on Ally Gold. That’s one for you.

Very much job dependant. Seasonal workers will still be allowed to be hired and wouldn't have to know how to speak English unless they wanted to relocate to the UK permanently. But if a foreign player signed a permanent contract I'd expect them to learn the local lingo too (and the same applies to British players playing abroad).

For Spurs the last U18 foreign player, that we signed and who went on to play a fair few games for us, I can only think of Bentaleb. And before him Stephen Carr?

I think the likes of Chelsea, Utd, Arsenal and City have had a few though.

Interesting to see what happens in the situation where you have a foreign lad under the age of 18 who is already living and schooling in the country. Presumably they'd be exempt?

Think the player that is always quoted as being the one that wouldn't qualify under the new rules is Kante , Leicester signed him from Caen in 2015 , he had no international appearances not even youth ones as far as I can see , question is do Caen qualify as a club with sufficient pedigree , expect their supporters think so.
