On the CB side I’ve been impressed by Lascelles (Newcastle) & Mings (Villa) but buying from other Prem teams can be quite expensive.

Read up a bit on Mings. Didn’t make the grade at academy level and went playing non-league. Started out as a LB, as despite his height, he was very lightweight. Bulked up over time to the level he is now. Now Lyons-Foster in our academy/development setup, often gets the same comments, technically great, but lightweight and rangy, do we not look at this and get them on specific training regimes?

Lascelles is a good defender and obviously has a bit of personality having been a captain from such a young age.

The question is, having always played in a deep, low-block defence at Newcastle, how would he fare coming to a team who (theoretically) ask him to defend high up the pitch, with less bodies infront of him and playing out from the back under pressure?

The one that interests me is Joe Gomez. Not getting much of a look in at Liverpool and I'd say he's ripe for a bit of 'unsettling'. He can play CB or RB (how handy is that?) and even though he's fit, Klopp played Milner at RB and Loevren at CB in the CL last night.

I'd say by the end of the season he'll be a regular starter for them again.

Certainly a good squad player and one for the future, so I doubt they'd do business with a potential PL rival.

I agree, but it's still mildly interesting. Klopp seems to like Matip though but to pick Loevren ahead of Gomez seems a bit wierd to me.

I think Gomez was supposed to play with VvD, but Matip has been too good to be dropped.

  • Solid depth across the forward line.
  • Lo Celso/Fernandes battling it out
  • DM competition
  • CB competition
This would be much better depth than we ever had at our "peak". Those benches were terrible most of the time.

Lucas, Lamela, Fernandes, Winks, Dier, Davies, Gazzaniga from the bench when all are healthy.

Then in another year you move on from Lamela, Sissoko & Hugo. Continued refreshing of 3 or four quality players.

So your answer to my question is you are only talking about next season then. Even then there are some questionable personnel and position choices in this lineup. But you made it work with 4 new players constraint. The problem is would it work on the field.

Don't think Liverpool will allow Gomez to us, but we could perhaps resurrect Stones career

listening to Talksh*te this morning, they were talking about Stones and how it looks like the end of him at Man City.

Personally think he’s class, but doubt we could afford him. I suppose Man City would look for a lot of money back for him.

At least they couldn’t use the ‘not selling to a rival’ excuse though ?

If we're going to go for a CB I think we really need to be looking at left sided. Having got involved in the debate though, I've been impressed with Tanganga from the bits I've seen and we also have Eyoma who's highly rated. Shame we got binned out of the League Cup since it would have been a chance for players like them.

You need some experience at CB. Losing Verts and Alderweireld will leave us exposed in that area with Sanchez and Foyth both relatively inexperienced still. If we buy a CB next summer I hope it's an experienced leader (who is coming into their peak years).

Anyone watch the Liverpool game to see how Berge played?

A little bit, I didn't see too much in the way of his ability as a DM but the bits I saw he dribbled out well, one time he got his pass away, other time he took too long and got the ball robbed off his feet as he was too indecisive.

For me we have enough CM options if we choose to play two from Dele, GLC, N'Dombele, Sissoko and Winks. If we had the luxury you could get Fernandes in and sell one of the last two. Either way, I think we need to buy a strong DM to sit behind two of those.

The development of Sessegnon is a big question as that decides on what we do at LB, RB is a must at this stage and CB will be too. I'd probably also want a forward to play in that front three too, but we could probably wait until the summer for that.

A glance through the mire of the SSN Transfer Centre and they would have us believe we are in for:

- Adrien Rabiot (Juve - CM. How scunnered would you be if we had to fork out a fortune to get him so soon after he moved on a free?)
- Carles Alena (Barca - CM/CAM/RM)
- Everton Soares (Gremio - LW/RW/2ndST)
- Denis Zakaria (Monchengladbach - CM/CDM)

Out of those I'd say Zakaria interests me the most as a possible Wanyama replacement. I don't know a thing about Alena or Soares.

Rabiot? I've always thought he had the ability to be a pretty great player, but he really doesn't appear to apply himself.

I'd not want Rabiot, he seems like a supreme toss pot. He is also a player that plays in a position we have cover in and don't need to fork out a fortune for. Zakaria sounds good, but Monchengladbach are doing well so unlikely for January you feel.

I think we should steer well clear of both Rabiot and Berge. The former is an arrogant tosser who'd rather whine than give it his all and the latter Isn't good enough and probably never will be.
