According to a report from Calciomercato, Tottenham are keen on signing Weston McKennie. And Juventus could look to sell the United States midfielder for a fee of around €25-30 million in January.

The 24-year-old central midfielder has done well for Juventus since joining the club. But he is not considered an indispensable asset for the Serie A outfit. Juventus are prepared to sell the player if their asking price is met, and McKennie has been linked with clubs like Aston Villa and AS Monaco as well.

Can't see what he brings that's much different to what we have. He's an 8 primarily, but Bissouma, who shone in that role for Brighton, hasn't had a single chance there. Skipp would be pushed even further down the pecking order, and it's obvious to me that what we really need is a 'lock picker' in midfield which we currently don't possess, and wouldn't get if we signed McKennie.

I personally think with 18 months left on his deal and with Paratici and Conte both reportedly fans of him we should be trying to get Milinkovic-Savic as a creative player. He literally has it all and would be the perfect CM for a 3 or even a 2 against lower opposition for Conte. He wouldn’t be cheap but I reckon we could get Lazio’s attention with a bid of 35m plus

I am only going off what I have read about him but he doesn’t seem a step up or offer anything different that our current players do.

If we buy a midfielder it has to be top quality or a young player to develop.

This type of signing would make far more sense if one of our existing CMs was aged 30+, but in theory none of our core four CMs have reached their prime yet. Also, we signed two CMs of a similar style with the last year and neither has flopped. Surely we should be focused on other areas in January.

I'd say that's very cheap when you compare it to what Everton want for Anthony Gordon. Imagine if we could actuqlly sell Ndombele for 30m and pick up SMS for 35.

I reckon somewhere between 35-45 and Lazio would be forced to deal with his contract situation and their standing as a club, he isn’t going to sign a new contract and they probably won’t make the CL so they can’t turn down good money in those circumstances. We need to start taking better advantage of top class players that play for clubs we are a step up from being available more often. The opportunity to try and sign him absolutely shouldn’t be passed up even if we have to prioritise RWB and CB because he’s an unbelievable player

Agree. January isn’t the time to prioritise positions. Availability and obtainability is the key.

We want top quality. We don’t get to choose what position that comes in.

Surely not a priority position that we need to upgrade, especially with limited funds to recruit

I think our limits are more on squad size than finances.

Does anyone have a breakdown of what we can buy this January in regards to homegrown or overseas?

My guess is unless we find buyers we can only buy one or two. If so, we want better than this guy.

We may be able to loan some players out, especially the likes of Gil and Spence if Conte isn't prepared to play them now. That would give us some short term squad space

Yeah I mean if we’re actually serious about Conte being a long term fixture and this being a “project” rushing to sign certain positions shouldn’t be the way to go. If a player like SMS is available you get it done and then you assess what else you can do because you cannot turn down that kind of quality if it’s realistic. He would instantly be one of our top 3 players

You're bang on tbh mate.

I mean he'd be an upgrade on Skipp imo and would be useful in a 3-5-2 but absolutely not a priority signing at all.

3 below are what we need desperately in Jan if we mean business and can identify the right players for our needs.
RWB
CB
AM (creative type like Kulu is e.g. Maddison)

Mckennie could come in next summer and would add to depth of the squad and bit more of an attacking CM than Skipp but wouldn't make much difference to the current clear weaknesses we have.

I do however rate him and if we can tick off our priority positions beforehand then getting McKennie for a decent sum in summer if all other priority areas are sorted would be a good move but I'd certainly not prioritise our budget towards him over the 3 positions mentioned.

But would we want to sign him ahead of Skipp? It appears to me Skipp has a good ceiling for improvement. I’d only want us to push him out of a player of real quality became available for us.

Skipp is too important from a HG angle to get pushed out. He was doing so well before his injury last season and he's struggling to get back up to speed, but I think he's a really important player for us in the long term.

Personally absolutely yes. I think McKennie is levels above Skipp but slightly different types of player.

You watching tonight? Mckennie showing how class he is. As I said for me he’s levels above Skipp and would certainly offer us something a bit different but do agree it’s not a priority position at all.
