So disappointed for him. I felt so proud and excited for him with his two brilliant performances for England.

He hadnt played for us much of late but he still had a chance until the injury and now operation.

I really enjoy watching him play- so direct and positive.

It seems a lot of people have gone off him because he doesnt get many goals and sometimes goes down a blind alley but his dribbling is brilliant, plays a good pass and is very difficult to play against.

He could be a big player for us given the opportunity on the right, which hopefully the new manager we are not talking to will give him.

Is Walker at risk of missing it? We might not have any representatives barring a horrific injury situation lol

That would be a shame and diminish my interest in England further. Probably the Belgian team will have the best quota of Spurs players, though i doubt i can develop any enthusiasm for watching Chadli.

If Hodgson had taken him then I would have lost all hope.

Christ, remember back in August the media were calling him England's (and Spurs') savior? That seems soooo long ago. What a fucking season this has been, I'm drained.

I think he would have gone. He was England's most dangerous player and started a run of games... Do you then change things up again, just as the tournament kicks off?

It is a shame for any player to miss out through injury, and harsh to say he didn't deserve to go. I have seen enough people saying they hope Lamela gets to go to the World Cup, what's the difference? He doesn't deserve to go either really based on form/fitness.

This injury might be a good thing for him mentally. If he was fit and wasn't picked for the World Cup squad (likely given his form, injuries), the mental deflation and embarrassment he would have suffered would have been huge given that back at the start of the season he was being touted as England's saviour...

This way he gets to think (or at least try to convince himself) that he only missed out through injury and save a bit of face

The fact that he was anywhere near the squad is a sad indictment of the strength in depth of English players at the moment.

Yes he had a good couple of games, but come on he's been mediocre at best this season and arguably not really any better than Lennon who gets pilloried on here on a regular basis.

If we were going to a shift and shoot based world cup then he'd be second name on the team sheet (behind Defoe obviously), but I believe there is a bit more too it these days.

That said, if he was in the running then I feel sorry for him as it's never nice to miss out on something as big as the World Cup whether it's because of injury (him) or a staggering lack of talent (me).

Some harsh words in here seeing as he played on through the injury on Saturday to help us get the 3 points even though he must have been making the injury worse, i really respect that.

I feel sorry for the lad.

The 'shift and shoot' comments that people offer up is pretty weak to say the least, not sure exactly but i think Defoe has something like 250 career goals, if people think he's go that many through 'shifting and shooting' they are pretty naive.

Can you here that? It's the sound of a few hundred Brazilians with tickets in Row Z breathing a huge sigh of relief.

Okay okay okay...

I'm prepared to admit that at least 10 of Defoe's goals may not have been through shifting and shooting.

I actually think that despite having too many shots, a composure/temperament issue, he has played two or three of the best passes/crosses/pick-outs this season when he has got calmed down, got his head up and had a look. There is talent there, we just seem to be absolutely woeful at developing players and getting them to show more consistency.

What's his record this season, 1 fluke goal and 0 assists??

And a screamer on England duty.

Sorry but if you can't displace Lennon from the team then how can you possibly have the right to play for England.

Will always wish him the best, I would love every spurs player to become world class, but I don't see Andros ever being good enough for a top 6-8 team

Disagree completely he isn't the same player that we seen for spurs this season that he was for England. Against England he was motm in the games he played.

If it wasn't for Townsend, England would never be in the world cup, something which gary neville admitted on MNF!
