I thought the England Vs Italy and Germany battle for the 4th CL place deserved its own thread.

The best place to keep updated on it is this:

http://kassiesa.home.xs4all.nl/bert/uefa/data/method4/crank2016.html

The site is basically run by some Dutch guy called Bert who has a lot of time on his hands.

You get lots of bonus points for just getting in the CL group stage (4) and then qualifying out of it (5) whereas you only get 2 bonus points for making the EL group stage and none for getting out of it, so to make loads of points in the Europa League you have to win lots of games (As in the CL, it's 2 points for a win, 1 for a draw) and in both the CL and EL you get bonus points for making the quarters, semi and final. With 4 English teams verses 2 Italian ones who made to the CL group stages, England should be miles ahead, but it's the Europa League that drags us down

What's hurt us this year even more than normal is two little teams like West Ham and Southampton getting Europa League places then bumming out before the group stages with barely a point or two between them, which causes England's average across the year to plummet, so it's extra important for the remaining clubs we have in Europe to do well to make up for the slack caused by West Ham and Southampton:

Though at least Sampdoria bummed out early as well, otherwise we might have really struggled to retain the place.

Regarding our team rating, if we can get to the semi-final and win the majority of games home and away along the way, then that should be enough to get us into Pot 2 for next season if we qualify for the CL:

Interesting stuff, thanks.

I seem to recall reading something a while ago which explained that other European countries do their best to ensure that their teams will perform well in Europe (for example rescheduling league matches), which is quite different to our tactic of cramming as many matches into a short period of time so Sky can get lots of money.

it's interesting that we could potentially be ranked higher than United next year as the majority of that 8 point gap will be closed when the 2011 coefficient falls off (we have 10 & they have 16 for that year).

I'd guess the clubs would rather have the money though.
