What the pundits & media are saying about us

I managed about 10 seconds of Merson.

We really need to find something else to do with ex-footballers than patronising them by making them pundits and subjecting the public to their reductive and pointless biased "analysis".

Merson is there to get a reaction and whilst I've not watched the clip, basing it on the last page or so, I'd say he is succeeding at his job.

Merson only continues to be employed by Sky because of his personal issues, I'm certain of it. He actually came across as an ok bloke during a couple of programs he's been in that focus on said issues. But as a pundit, he's beyond parody.

In the old days people like Merson would have had a testimonial, used the funds to buy a pub in Chingford or Waltham Abbey & proceed to “entertain” the regulars with tales of when they played. So you could easily swerve ex-arsenal or westam publicans.

Another good system spoiled by the premier league money.

I think football has come a long way since his day, he was allowed to develop all sorts of addictions without the proper support he needed to focus on his football or his family life etc.

Clubs, managers and agents are much better at helping these players focus on things that keep them out of trouble nowadays. Back in the day most clubs/teams would have at least one player with demons plaguing them like Gazza, Merson, Adams etc. whereas nowadays it’s a rarity.

If you look at the pundits coming through now, the likes of Micah Richards, Andros Townsend and Theo Wallcot all seem decent lads with their priorities sorted.

If Merson wasn’t on sky I fear what would happen to him, and I’m sure that’s the only reason he wasn’t moved on when Le Tissier Thompson and Nichols were.

I've always felt that current managers give you a vastly superior insight on the game than former footballers.

Keane, Neville, and Richards also chat absolute bollocks.

So are the pundits going to say that we have now played "someone" and should be taken seriously

Do you think we should at this stage? I'm still of the opinion that things have started well but I'm still very aware that there will be some downs in our future and I need to see how we react to them. Right now we are riding that new manager bounce, and the players having the weight of the world lifted off them. Now I'm not saying that bubble will burst but it might.

As Ange keeps telling us there is no quick fix, and the end goal will take time and patience. I'd rather the media and pundits didn't put that pressure back on in all honesty.

To be fair I think a good number of pundits have praised our start under Ange and they are right in saying we will have to see how we do against the top teams (likely City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Brighton this year)

Pay no attention to Merson and his bias rubbish.

I generally agree with this, but I'm not sure it's the usual new manager bounce.

It's all happened a lot quicker and more smoothly than I expected and Arsenal away today were a proper test. Saying all that, I think there will be bumps in the road and it will be interesting to see how both the players and the fanbase react. I think Ange will expect it and be super calm.

Very, very early days.

The total and utter disrespect shown towards us by the pundits is absolutely ridiculous.
I don’t mind that. Because we all know differently. Let’s allow the pundits to spout their wild opinions whilst we crack on and progress beyond the expectations of the so-called experts: under the radar stylee

We have shown the potential, but it's still the start of the rebuild, both in personnel and tactics. I would say it's more than just the new manager bounce though, but we are bound to hit a bad patch and we still lack depth in certain areas. An injury to Maddison, Bissouma or Son and we will look very flat again. With a full team though we have good energy and much more fluid in attack, but we will need patience to allow Ange to continue to build and get the depth we will need if we truly want to compete right at the top again.

I actually think most pundits are right in we're playing nice football and a lot of positivity can be seen in the team, but there are bigger tests to come. The likes of Merson will always be against us, so we don't need to pay much attention.

Do journalists count for this? A very nice read:

Particularly liked this:

"At times Ange Postecoglou’s team looked alluringly fearless, indeed almost reckless in the way Destiny Udogie, for example, looked to dominate his flank – not carefully, or advisedly, but all the time, in every single active second of the game."

We're an injury or two away from Højbjerg in midfield or Dier/Phillips in defence.

It's a long season. Been a great start and I now hope to see us finishing in the top 6 but I am not counting our chickens yet.

Realism ain't pessimism. Never cross the bridge before it comes.

Indeed. We have a very good starting XI, but with a massive drop in quality to our reserves in some positions (primarily at CB). For that reason, I believe the absence of European footie could be a blessing in disguise.

Carragaher said fuck all in that analysis but les got it right. They changed because of how we played. We are a work in progress but if we can go to the deathstar and make them change their way of playing then we are on the right track. It’s ok to be both pessimistic and encouraged. The media won’t put pressure on us because to them we are never a threat, just play well now and again. We changed that under Poch and it feels like we are changing that under Ange. Over or under the rader this is going to be a ride. Embrace it.
