Will late goals stop early leavers?

Along with many others on SC, I have been known to rant against early leavers. I don't understand it, and have never left a game before the final whistle - including losing 6-1 at home to Chelski under Dr Death's management. Since moving to East Upper Block D in 2007 I've witnessed the same geezer leave around 82 mins in every home game, including NLD on Saturday, missing the glorious winner and the hugfest that followed. Given our latest habit of scoring late, is there any chance he might stay in future? Anybody that often slips away early to beat the traffic thinking of changing their habit and actually watching the whole game?

Never get the 'judgement' on early leavers.

Perhaps he has a job to get to and needs to get out before the rush to make his job in time?

Or maybe he leaves his kid with someone to take care of and has to/ wants to likewise get back in time to give her tea?

Or whatever. Not everyone is footloose and fancy free, you know!

I rarely leave early, once or twice in 30 years. But I can turn up a bit late on occasion and miss some great early moments. Very annoying.

I try not to be too judgey, but when I think of similar explanations to those you offer, they don't really fit with the wide range of kick off times we suffer these days - you'd be unlucky to have to start a shift within an hour of every game finishing, regardless of day/time, for instance. My question is, will behaviours change if we keep winning late?

Agree. I thought it was common knowledge that many leave early in order to save an hour or so travelling home. As soon as the final whistle sounds, up to and over 38,000 people are trying to leave a small area using transport connections that can't handle the numbers.

Thought it was common knowledge, but perhaps not.

Yep, it is common knowledge, I suppose I just prefer to watch the conclusion of the game I've sacrificed a lot to afford over getting home to my armchair, nice cup of tea and slice of Victoria sponge 40 mins earlier.

My pal leaves at 85 minutes. Pretty much near where the op sits. Block E. It might even by him. Lol.
Anyway, he has to drive back to Bury St Edmunds. That extra 5-10 minutes can mean another hour on his journey. I'm not saying that I would do it but he pays his money every year, and has done since long before I met him 20+ years ago, so he can do as he pleases.

I never understand it. People next to me left after 88 mins on Saturday to catch the Eastenders Ominbus. I am always told they have bought the ticket they can do what they like. Well they can of course, they can come late, leave early, read the paper throughout or not come at all but i would prefer to watch with a stadium full of fans behind the team and supporting it for 90+ minutes whatever is happening on the pitch.

what bollocks

so if someone leaves early for whatever reason, then its the same as someone booing?
I know someone who leaves early sometimes cos he runs a restaurant......disgusting fan
Course it is, what message does rows of empty seats that were full earlier spell out to the players? Erm, as you were lads, you give your all for ninety minutes, I won't bother to support you all the way as I've got a previous engagement.

A real fan could have that seat.

I remember people leaving early on the last day of the season when we were drawing 0-0 with Sunderland. Bale scored not soon after they left and all we needed was a newcastle goal against arsenal and we would have got 4th.

No, late goals will not stop early leavers

It was nice on Saturday to actually see a near full house at the final whistle clapping off the players. Happens far too rarely. The times we have played pretty well and drawn or won only to see no more than about 10-15k people left to clap the team off is both sad and a sign of the times....

The early leavers are the ones who have a nightmare of a journey home, so leg it as soon as they dare to get ahead of the crowds you get at the final whistle. You get the same thing at most inner city grounds.

I actually hang around for 10 mins after to let the crowds die down before I make my way out. But purely because it's a fairly straightforward walk down to Tottenham Hale for me. If you had to go get in the queues for the train or bus, or get back to the car to sit in traffic for yonks, i wouldn't blame them.

Ok, that's ridiculous. No excuse with Series Link these days.

Really? I get it.

Of course there will always be a few who have to leave early for valid reasons. But the vast majority who leave early only do so in order to avoid the worst of the traffic and get home to their sofas in time for X Factor or some other equally trivial reason.

These early leavers have no consideration for the fans who merely wish to watch the game to its end but who cannot properly do so for all the people in their row, and the rows in front, shuffling past them for much of the final 5-10 minutes.
