A world 11? Who will they play, is the fixture home or away, and if the latter, what are the gravitational and atmospheric conditions like? Your Buffons may be all very well swanning around Serie A, but how would they cope with a radiation-lashed Tuesday night on Alpha Centauri?

Slight tangent but I still maintain that at the end of every season each league's team of the year should play against each other in a tournament. They could hold it in China or whoever pays the most, instead of the club's going on these end of season tours. Would be great to watch.

Not for me. Not discrediting xavi in any way, but I feel Pirlo had a far bigger influence in games than xavi did. Feel Pirlo is criminally underrated just like iniesta who is a fucking genius.

I think he's a bit overrated, maybe Spurs bias, but I rate Modric higher. Pirlo has always been an insane passer and a deadball specialist, but I think there have been a few better CMs. Scholes and Vieira are up there too

I'd also rate Desailly & Thuram as two of the better players during their time.

I'd probably go:

Buffon

Cafu
Cannavaro
Nesta
Zanetti

Xavi
Zidane
Iniesta

Messi
Ronaldo
C.Ronaldo

This is pretty much spot on but just for the sake of it i'll pick the opposition:

Schemiechel

Neville
Puyol
Desailly
Carlos

Scholes
Pirlo

Ronaldinho
Bergkamp
Giggs

Henry

Defence has to be Cafu, Costacurta, Baresi and Maldini ... not sure I have seen anybody on 55yrs better. The rest of the team is more difficult!

Nice thread.

Agree with most of the suggestions so far. Not sure I'd call Paolo Maldini overrated though

I would think Nedved would be on the bench, and I really rated Vidic too. And Ledley of course.

A best 11 from the 90s side would also be an interesting choice. Good luck picking the strikers for that one! Maradona, Van Basten, Batistuta, Jurgen, Lineker, Shearer, Shevchenko, Baggio, Raul, Non-greasy Ronaldo...tough competition.

My god there were some amazing attacking players in the 90's

I forgot Le Tissier too. One of my favourite players ever.

Not sure if defenders are getting better, tactics are getting smarter, strikers are getting poorer, or all three. There does seem to be a lack of quality strikers around these days (with the exception of two of the greatest strikers of all time).

Thank Satan we have Harry Kane. I don't think there's any doubt that he's one of the best strikers in the world.

I would put Ferdinand or Stam in tbh. Schmeichel in goal.

Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Figo, Zidane, etc would be an interesting match against Messi, C Ronaldo, Suarez, Xavi, Iniesta etc
