TSH, you really are unfairly biased against Zokora for some reason.

Zokora is a very good defensive midfielder and I believe he showed that against Chelsea on Sunday.

That's the thing though. He isn't a very good defensive midfielder.

If you take Makalele as the model of a good defensive midfielder you'd say they have to have good positioning and control and the ability to spot the simple but effective pass quickly.

For me Zokora's positioning is woeful and his control is notoriously bad. On top of that he rarely passes it forwards which would be fine as long as he made the sideways passes quickly...but he takes an age over them.

As a right back I think Zokora was our best player in the first two games and I think in a five man midfield he's ok.

But in a 4-4-2 I've seen him be mediocre for two years alongside Jenas. I'm not sure that playing alongside a player who runs around less will make Zokora a better player.

I saw the interview with Poyet with my own eyes, infact I saw the whole feed as I work at the BBC, I'm not calling him a liar. Its just the way the questions were put to him mean his anwers can be interpreted in a different way.

I guess we i will see in two weeks how wel will line up, but I just don't think our shape will be pure 442 in the way it was last season and under Jol.

ah well thats different then. there will be 2 CM's there will be 2 wide men and there will be 2 striker on the picth. how the second striker plays is maybe up for interpretation and Bently if played wide will come inside but in a static foramation it will be a 442 or a bastardisded version of it. We'll take this argument back up after the Villa game.

I really think we should go 2 up front. Bent hasn't really worked as a lone striker and asking Pavyluchenko to do that in his first game would be alot to ask of him.

On top of that I think having 4 in midfield would give us a bit more space and would also mean that Bentley/Gio/Modric wouldn't have to worry about trying to get up alongside the striker.

Of course that will be a bit futile if the midfield let Villa walk through them like Sunderland did which is why I'm convinced the midfield shouldn't be JJ and Modric. Maybe Zokora and Modric. Or maybe Corluka and JJ/Zokora with Modric on the left.

I'd say Zokora and JJ with Modric on the left but I think last season proved that those two can't run a midfield between them.

* I know about the international break and no King or Woody for England, but I think one of them to take the rest longer to keep them both fit for UEFA cup ( Villa in Mon. 15/9 and Wasla Krakow 18/9 and you know Corluka isn't available ) .. then another busy week ahead of us as we will play against Wigan & Newcastle in CC. so I would like Ramos to give Gunter another chance upfront the fans to give him a confidence which he need to develop as player. Corluka need to cope with CB more than RB for us as you know King/Woody problems, Dawson not trusted too much, and we will stick by him in CB sooner rather than later when Hutton.

For Aston Villa, I think King is better option as Woodgate could play in UEFA cup and the Sunday after ..

Gomes
Gunter - Corluka - King - Bale
Bentley - Jenas - Zokora - Giovanni
Modric
Pavel

bench: Sanchez, Woodgate, Ekotto, O'Hara, Jenas, Lennon, Bent
* Pavel should play instead of Bent as he won't play in UEFA cup.

* no need for 2 strikers in the bench while Giovanni in starting XI and could be swiched as second striker if needed.

Agree completely. I just cannot believe that we will still be looking at a Zokora/Jenas central midfield. Out of the players currently on our books the only two who IMO could operate in the DM role are O'Hara and, perhaps, Corluka. Huddlestone, Zokora and Jenas do not have the required discipline and positional sense for the role.

I'm also surprised at the number of posters who pick Dos Santos in their starting line-ups. I was at the Bridge on Sunday and felt that he was far and away the worst player on the pitch. He is just too lightweight for the EPL at present. He is only young and will develop but I feel that he has been over-hyped.

I hope that we do not play 4-5-1 in home games. This only works when the midfield get up to support the striker. On Sunday, Bent was completely isolated. Berbatov could play the lone striker in a 4-5-1 but Bent cannot and I'm not sure that Pav can either. Playing 4-4-2 when we only have two front line strikers and a kid shows the folly of our transfer dealing. Owen, Milito or Garcia would have given us far more options.

So in a minority of 1, I would go for the following formation:

Gomes
Corluka Woodgate King Bale
Bentley Jenas O'Hara Modric
Pav Bent

Another option would be to put Modric in the centre instead of Jenas and play Lennon on the left (not ideal but I'd prefer to keep Bentley on the right).

Corluka/Hutton(if fit)---King---Woodgate---Bale
Bentley------Jenas------Modric--------Lennon
---------Pav-----------Bent

I think he will play 4-5-1 away but play 4-4-2 at home. I also think Gio will start every other match unless he plays a blinder.
No need to rest King or Woody they got this week off :)

I have a feeling that Ramos might suprise us, which wouldnt suprise me (which i suppose wouldnt be a suprise anymore but eh). He did suprise me when he put Jenas in at right back, but i thought i was a masterstroke. I dont he will do it against villa, because i believe Zokora is only suited to the DM role in a 5 man midfield. But i think he may well put Zokora back to RB because of the pacy threat of Ashley Young on the wing. It was the thing i noticed about Zokora in pre-season was his ability to keep pace with fast wingers. My only concern is Jenas, because i personally do not rate him that highly but Ramos obviously does. the form of Gio and Bentley could also have an effect, which could bring in O'Hara. So the team i would like to see is:

------------Gomes----------------

Zokora---King---woodgate-----Bale

Bentley--Corluka---Modric-----O'Hara

--------Pav-------Bent------------

But I expect Jenas will not be left out and may play in the centre with Corluka with Modric floating/loosely on the left. But i really hope that jenas doesnt play with zokora in the middle because i do agree that it isnt sturdy enough.

I've changed my mind.

Gomes

Corluka -- Woodgate -- King ---------
------------------------------------ Bale
Zokora
Jenas -- Modric
Lennon-----------------------------------
----------------- Giovani
Bent ----

Subs: Cesar, Dawson, Gunter, Huddlestone, Bentley, Campbell, Pavlyuchenko.

A sort of 4-5-1/4-3-3 with wingers, but alter
ed a bit. Giovani operating more as a second striker than a left winger, as he tucks in to allow Bale to operate as a left wing back, as I don't think he needs a left winger in front of him. I think Lennon looks better than Bentley at the moment, but either can play there and that's probably both of their best positions, and I can't see both Bent and Pavlyuchenko playing together much this season. With our lack of strikers, I expect we'll only play one more often than not. I don't think Bent should be dropped after scoring against Chelsea, and Pav doesn't have to make his full debut right away.

I just feel that in this formation most players get to play in their strongest positon, getting the most out of each of them.
