Muntari coy on Spurs link

Inter midfielder refuses to rule out Premier League return

By Giscard Gourizro Last updated: 21st April 2009

Muntari: Transfer talk

Sulley Muntari insists he is happy at Inter Milan but has refused to rule out a summer return to England.

The Ghana international moved to Serie A in July 2008, having enjoyed a successful one-year stay at Portsmouth.

He has been a regular for Jose Mourinho's side this season, but is reported to have grown frustrated at the level of racism which exists among a minority of Italian supporters.

With his future therefore deemed to be uncertain he has recently been linked with a move to Tottenham.

Muntari admits he would welcome the opportunity to play in the Premier League again at some stage of his career, but stopped short of confirming as to whether that would happen during the 2009/10 campaign.

"I love the football in England, there is no doubt about that, that is where the best league is," the midfielder told skysports.com.

"But I only signed last year for Inter and I like it here. As long as the coach still needs me, I am happy to stay.

"At the end of the season things could change, though, so we will have to wait and see."

Admiration

Muntari worked with Spurs boss Harry Redknapp during his days at Pompey and he admits a reunion with the experienced coach would appeal to him.

"Everyone knows that I really like Harry," he added.

"He is one of the best coaches in football, he is a top manager like the one I have at the moment.

"A move to Spurs? I don't know."

Never going to happen unless Mourinho leaves Inter in the summer and they go in a new direction, but what a signing he would be. Would enable us to play Modric in the middle or the left perhaps depending on the opposition, with Muntari able to cover both positions in a more defensive role.

I like Muntari, but not sure he's the kind of midfielder we need alongside Palacios

Unless we are selling Zokora then I don't see this happening. I think we'll only need 4 1st team cm's next season if we don't make europe. At the moment we have WP, JJ, Zokora and THudd. Also O'Hara can play cm, not sure Muntari is what we need unless one or two of the above are being sold.

Is Muntari a left footer then as never really been too sure what position he played?

The perfect addition to the Spurs team. It would put an end to the midfield debate in an instant. Muntari and Palacios would be a stunning combination. A left footer and a right footer. Two tough, tough tacklers. Muntari is creative too. Much more than people give him credit for.

Lennon -- Palacios -- Muntari -- Modric

That would be a dream come true for me!

He used to play a more conventional left wing for Ghana before being moved inside to be a box to box midfielder. Great passer, likes a tackle, good engine, and scores some absolute belters from outside the box. Super player.

I know I change my tema sig 100 times but I did have Muntari at left mid with Modric alongside Palacios for a very long time . This would be an excellent signing IF Modric wants to play in the middle. It gives us a natural left footer to play wide left whilst Modric does his magic in the middle

He has been poor at Inter but was excellent in the premier league

That would be a good team thinking about it. I certainly don't think it'd be right to bring Modric into the middle and have Muntari on the left. I'd still prefer Barry though.

Playing in the stodgy, rigid Inter midfield is enough to drain the life and love of football out of anyone though...

An upgrade of Wilson Palacious then? In your opinion, would he benefit us considering our playing personnel and how they gel at the moment?

I think it could work in certain games though. Say playind United, and Ronaldo is lining up on the right and they have, say, Anderson and Carrick in midfield. Muntari goes left to help protect the fullback on their biggest threat, Modric goes in the middle, with Wilson as his minder, and shows them that we have the next Paul Scholes (maybe minus the finishing)...

Wilson is not dissimilar to Diarra and they had a great midfield partnership at Pompey.

I've seen it suggested that he's not a huge upgrade on Jenas. I've not really seen him much but if we do sign another midfielder that have to be significantly better than what we already have.

Don't agree with that. Started almost every game for a team top of the league and scored a vital winner early this season against Juve (even if he tried to miss it!). He's been asked to do a job this season for Inter and is disciplined enough to do it. Still got a couple of goals to his name and a number of assists.

Agree he was amazing in the PL. I remember those two goals against Villa in the same game. Both goals of the season contenders!

As was the entire Inter team. Take that out of your mind. Never saw him play for Pompey?

Sounds nice.

I agree with Kendall, he'd probably slow more comfortably in the middle although as he can go wide it's a good option as allows more flexibility in our play - if Modric takes the ball into the middle Muntari would be able to move out wide and provide an option / outlet.

Keep the sig how it is - it cheers me up everytime I see it because that is without doubt a top 4 side.

(You may want to give Bentley is 'y' back though).
