Has qualifying for the CL "really" made any difference...?

For the last 10 odd years we have watched other teams qualify for the CL and then go on to sign top quality players. We always blamed the CL for us not attracting the "real" quality players yet now that we have qualified for it they still (so far) dont want to come. It's not like we are after Messi, Kaka, Ronaldo, etc. Even the middle ranked players who have got the potential to be world class seem to be snubbing us (Suarez, Kjaer, Cavani, etc). what are we doing wrong...?

I know it's only early July and that we still have some 8 weeks left of the transfer window but I am getting a little bit worried now.....

We've not actually qualified for the CL outright yet. This could be a reaason.

Also the other reason, is that there is a World Cup going on, and the transfer window has only been open for 5 days!!

It doesn't surprise me, just because we're in the CL it doesn't really make us a general CL team.

If Everton started better last season they could have made the CL qualifiers instead of us, yet we wouldn't really expect Suarez, Forlan, Dzeko etc. to suddenly join them.

But yes, it is still early days anyway.

Its probably because we wont pay stupendous wages more than anything else I'd have thought.

Have we ever seen a team qualify for the CL for one season and then attract a significantly higher calibre of player? No, because the same teams have been qualifying year on year.

Sustained involvement is what garners a reputation that attracts top players, at the moment we are still a curiosity to the ambitious foreign player, he is thinking "are they going to challenge for honours, or slip away into Citeh's slipstream?"

Alternatively we could pay decent players like Silva and Yaya Toure an insane amounts of wages, like £160k a week. An idea so horrible I can barely countenance it.

But Suarez, Cavani and Kjaer, who were all mentioned in SunnyD's post are within our "current" wage structure unlike the bigger names. And if make CL and don't adjust our wage structure a little, then we won't make CL again.

I was expecting one big signing, like when we first got into the europe in 06 we signed Berbatov. But as the world cup is going on Harry was in SA maybe scouting for players, But watching Harry's interview on SSN today he was saying he is maybe looking to add 1 or 2 players to improve the squad, and he also said it's hard to find players that what we already have. Also another factor is ridiculous wages and transfer fees demanded. Dzeko for £30m is crazy.

i still think we will make one "big" signing. The problem is until Citeh wrap up their spending the prices of all players are 10-15% higher. Basically we have to keep our powder dry until Citeh flood the market with cash and the whole thing will start moving a bit.

The one difference I am dreading is that some of the squad will now think they have made it and will forget to put the necessary effort in to stay where we are and go up another level.

I'd be happy if we only signed a proven goalscorer but we'll have to wait until Uruguay knocked out of the World Cup 1st.

Personally I can see Joe Cole, Micah Richards , Diego Forlan and another Man City midfielder coming in with Keane, Pav and Jenas leaving. - Job done

When it comes down to it these days it's more about money than it is anything else as proved by the fact that Man City have managed to buy 3 CL players in Silva, Toure and Boateng.

The wages they can offer and the promise of what can happen this season (i.e. prem title) would be just as, if not more appealing that possible CL games that we can offer.

I'm pretty we would challenge for the title, surely that's the next step for us. I don't think that's it when it comes to City, they just have so much money.

I don't think we would even be talking to Joe Cole if we weren't in the Champions League tbh.

It does make a difference, not a huge one but it does.

I also think people read too much into these so called snubs by players.

I still think we'll sign a high profile striker. It's all we really need for the 1st team.

SunnyD do you have to put the most negative spin on everything to do with Spurs? All last season you told us we'd be lucky to finish 7th, now you're worrying that we haven't gone on a Football Manager type spending bonanza?

We've already got a fantastic squad that is going to be hard to improve on anyway, and I can't help wonder how many more points we might have gained had we not suffered the worst injury crisis season I've seen Spurs have. We will make a couple of signings, but the last thing I want is us to disrupt the squad with an array of signings as the most important thing last season was the team, and we should be doing everything we can to keep this team spirit together with a couple of additions to hopefully turn us into title challengers.

Has anyone snubbed us, I mean actually come out and said that I don't want to Join Tottenham Hotspur Football Club?

Apart from Fabiano, but was he realistic anyway.

I doubt we were even interested tbh. Too expensive for a player who has 1 year left on his contract (they're asking something like £25m for him) and nearing 30. I think he was asked about Spurs simply because of rumours. But lets face it, we're rumoured to be interested in any half decent striker atm.

Surely Harry would've mentioned him during the World Cup if he was interested. I just think we're linked with so many players that we're going to get reported snubs, even though we weren't even interested.

The first, and massive, difference it's made is the new contracts that were signed by Bale and especially Modric. I think it was highly likely Modric would have been the target and tempted by CL regulars this summer.

So I believe CL qualification has made a difference already. I think that with regards to quality recruiting it will help, but we are still part of a food chain and will have to accept this, although we have undoubtedly moved a notch up that chain. Getting through the CL qualifying well help us move up another notch and finishing in the top 4 again would move us further.

Good point RE Modric/Bale. Crucial signings and finishing 4th may well have been huge factor in that, and they most definitely were a huge factor in us getting 4th, and will be next year too - hopefully higher than 4th. Fuck it, lets win this thing.

I will be happy with acquiring a young-ish aspirational keeper who will want to push Gomez every day in training for his position.

Another quality CB to replace Woody while he is out long term. There's no-one coming through the reserves.

A Striker capable of keeping pace with Defoe to bag 25 plaus next season.

Then I'll be happy.
