Awful season

I think some fans are getting a little beyond themselves.

Is this season a dissapointment? Yes. Of course. 4th last year, great CL campaign, but ultimately a dire run in the PL for the second half of the season which means dodgy Europa or no Europe at all next year.

But has this season been "awful"? Absolutely not. Jesus, some of the fans here really make me want to puke. The OP says he has been a season ticket holder for 20 years. Can he not remember a few years ago when a Carling Cup win or a sniff of the Intertoto was a big deal for us? I can't remember a season in memory where I was excited to watch so many games.

Awful, my arse.

I think it has been awful.
There havent been that many great games this season. Infact Villa and Arsenal away are the only ones that stand out for me. We have been very poor at home all season.

On to our great CL adventure. I would say just 2 games have been outstanding. Inter at home and AC away.

Dont get me wrong I was jumping up and down like a mad man like every other Spurs fan during after these 2 games.

My point is that it has been an awful season and we had a very strong base to build from this season and for whatever reason we did not improve. That is a massive disapointment IMO..We will not have this opportunity again in the near future. We have blown it.

I think you can just about get away with calling it an awful season if you see it in the context of what could have been - I agree that it is a mssive opportunity missed

In the general contaxt of supporting spurs it has been far from awful

I'd say relatively speaking the League season has been pretty dire, we managed to stay in the hunt for 4th so long not through any right doing of our own but because up until recently the teams below us have been shocking, Liverpool have put a sustained run of form together and now look likely to finish above us quite comfortably, I suspect if the season was a couple of games longer then Everton would also.

I can't think of any time during the season where I have really enjoyed watching us in the league, even the games where fans proclaim we played well from start to finish we have spent the time frojm 85 mins onwards biting our nails trying to hold on to a 1 goal lead.

When I say relatively dire I mean in relation to what this squad of players should have achieved, no amount of fond memories of reaching the second knockout stage of a cup competition are gonna make up for the fact that we have taken a combined total of 4 points from the leagues bottom 3, having now played each twice, and have drawn half of our home games.

Our continued presence in the race for fourth up until now says more about our rivals being poor for large periods than something we should take credit for.

I don't want to be too down about our squad as the talent is clearly there and as last season showed the commitment is also in there somewhere, sadly I think the management has let us down this year. Poor man management and use of the squad, alongside a small time attitude that viewed playing CL as achievement enough led to them not concentrating enough on results in the league and it seeped through to the players IMO.

Awful, my arse.

That was when we had a midfield of Anderton, Poyet, Redknapp and Ziege though, not much more could have been expected then, or in more recent times Jenas and Zokora were our dynamic duo in the centre and again not much more than a cup run and top 7 finish could be expected.

Previous seasons have no bearing on what the current squad should be achieving, VDV, Modric, Bale are not lesser players because of the fact not so long ago we had Tony Grdner in our ranks.

Yes we should give the side credit for coming a long way in a short time, but that credit shouldn't be all encompassing and paper over any cracks, and 9 league draws at home, mainly against inferior opposition, are some pretty mighty cracks which have sunk our season.

This is why other supporters call us all kinds of names and there is no defense.

Sixth place and the quarter finals of the Champions League. During the run in the latter, we were the toast of Europe.

Has there been some lows? Yes. It hasn't always been brilliant, but for a long while it was superb. It can't have been amazing for long stretches and then awful as an aggregate.

The last month or so has been awful, but the season has been great. And we can look back on our form against the bottom half and wonder "what if". But if this is awful, then you will never be happy. Never. We'll win the league one day and you'll be some ridiculous Real Madrid supporter saying we should have scored 3 in every game and call for the head of the manager.

To be fair, some of you aren't here for the game. You're here to moan. That's the only thing that football gives you. I feel sorry for you. Because you missed out on a fun season.

This post nails it for me.

Nobody is saying there hasn't been disappointments, but to label the whole season as 'awful' is just absolute bollocks.

Blimey, what a thread to miss! Jay, you're the most negative person i've met on here in some time, and that's going some. Perhaps you expected us to apply for planning permission for a new stadium on the Moon?

Here's an idea - how about you start going to the games that twenty years of holding a season ticket would allow? If you have indeed held a ticket for twenty years then i'd question for what club that ticket is, as i've been following Spurs nearer 30 years and can honestly say that this is the closest we've been to "the top" in my memory. We've performed well against the top clubs, dropped points against the bottom ones - swings and roundabouts. Sure, it appears we didn't qualify for CL again, maybe not even for the waffa, but all i see when i read your post is "waah waah, don't care the reasons, we didn't win the CL and League double, so it's the END OF THE FOOKIN WORLD!!".

There are plenty of reasons, not least the fact we haven't spent bajillions, are not in mountains of debt, don't have a squad full of over-earning prima-donnas and still have a superb base of a squad to build on.

Get over your misery, stop trying to convince us the sky is falling, Chicken Little, cos we know better.

Hats off to that man. Some people do revel in acting up to the stereotype other fans often give us...

Wait, are you saying that because we have a few better players in the midfield we should expect top flight football every season?

That's just loopy.

Astonishing. Truely astonishing. I've never met Spurs fans like you 3 in the real world. Are you paid to post by Levy?

Yeah we had a good champions league run but if you ignore that we have gone backwards. It simple Harry has no intrest in Spurs he is trying to coast till he gets offered the England Job so he has become to scared to do anything. We should call it a day with Harry because he will not be our manager by the end of october so get rid of him now before we sell our prize assets because we are not competing.

There were highs yes, but the season is ending on a major low and if at the end of the season we finish 6th with no silverware then the season was not a success.

I don't think it's unreasonable for fans to have expected more from this squad. Admittedly there are some who seem to think the world is gonna end as a result of our league finish, but you can't tar all of the fans not overjoyed with the campaign with the same extremist brush.

I'd personally say that overall the season is a disappointment, the CL was nice but really I don't think we achieved anything more than we should have. Inter have since shown themselves to not be that great this season and Milan are nowhere near the side they used to be, so whilst beating them was very nice, it's not the spectacular achievement that the players can live off for the rest of their days.

Had we put up more of a fight in the second leg against Madrid and at least given the fans a feelgood factor with a couple of goals and maybe a win over one of the very top teams in the world then I may loook back on our run more fondly but my main memory now is of a solitary goal in our last 4 games in the competition, going out with a whimper and next to no chance of ANY Euro footy next year, let alone CL.

Ultimately as a Spurs fan I'm pretty happy simply if we have won our most recent match, however that feeling has been pretty rare the last few months so my judgement of the season may well be clouded.

There's nobody saying you can't be disappointed in how this season has ended. And you can be concerned about the direction if you like. It's just that Plymouth are going down, might be closed down and have had their electricity paid for by Peter Reid. THAT'S AN AWFUL SEASON. Perspective can be helpful.

And personally I am not paid by Levy, but I'll give him my address if he wants to send a check

Nowhere did I say anything of the sort, I'm saying that just because we were shit in the 90's doesn't mean we don't have the right to expect better of our players now.

There seems to be a mindset amongst some posters that anyone who is not overjoyed with the fact that we played CL this season can't have been a fan for very long. That's simply not true, why on Earth should our league finishes over the last decade, when in many cases a Carling Cup run and sniff of Uefa Cup would have had us all pitching tents, lead to lower expectations of players like Gomes, Bale, Lennon, Modric, VDV etc?

I wouldn't expect us to finish 4th or higher, but I think it's fair to expect us to pick up at least one win from home games against Wigan, Blackpool, West Ham, West Brom or Sunderland.

LOL. He will say he will say he will pay you then at the last minute he will pay Azreal.

We're not Plymouth mate. As much sympathy I have for them and Stockport we are not them. We have spent more than anyone in the last 5 years bar Chavs and now Citeh. It is not unreasonable to expect a return for that. Of course I loved the cl. Truely loved it but the mauling we recieved of Madrid tarnished it somewhat. And the resons why that happened also seemed to be preventable to some extent. It has been very frustrating again. I know I should get used to it but I cant.

To try give a more concise answer, we have better players all over the pitch than we have had in my memory as a fan, apart from up front, but defense, midfield and keeper are far stronger than I've ever seen, so I think it's fair for fans to have higher expectations than back in the days where we pined to finish high enough to enter the Intertwobob.

Harking back to those days and saying "you should count yourself lucky", just isn't rational when assessing a football club.
