I don't think a new contract would suffice if Modric is determined to leave, which is still very much debatable.
There is no way we would be able to compete financially with Chelsea to offer Modric a similar package so we have to convince, if that is the case, Modric to show him that we are a club with aspirations and that we will be challenging on all fronts next season.
Chelsea are by no means guaranteed to be winning trophies anymore than us but as long as we show some chutzpah in the transfer market and make a lot of positive noises about where this club is going then I'm sure that would be sufficient in getting Modric onside.
