You don't think better performance on the field that a settled team would provide, qualification for the CL and the associated revenue is a long term plan? It's all just black and white yeah? Spend more money = burn like Leeds?

So we should spend lots of money so that we get in the Champions League yeah? How much money 'guarantees' us getting into the CL exactly?

Also, and here's a quick quiz question for you, can you remember a team in recent years who has spent wildly to get into the Champions League, then not qualified and then struggled. Extra bonus points if you can tell me what divisions they've been in for the last 5 years.

The point is that once you get a reputation for paying over the odds that reputation will stick and every other club, agent and player will want more than they're worth.

Do you think Downing is worth 20m? No of course he isn't. But because Liverpool had already paid stupidly over the odds for Carroll and Henderson, Villa were always going to ask for an OTT price. Liverpool will now find it very hard to get players at a reasonable price because everyone knows they're prepared to pay over the asking price.

We can't afford to do that unfortunately and Spurs fans really need to start understanding that.

TSH, I don't know why you are bothering mate, Bang.head.brick.wall.

yes a settled team is essential, but we haven't even played ONE game in the PL this season (i know, not by design) & we have 9 days left in a transfer window that has been slow across the country to date. Forgive me if i'm wrong but a couple of weeks won't wreck our season or bump us out of a chase for top 4.

Panicking and trying to second guess the club WILL affect those chances IF it transmits onto the pitch on matchday.

Come 1st Sept moan all you like..............i may be alongside you!

My mate works for a cosmetic surgery company, and one of his clients is a senior figure at Spurs - wouln't tell me who but says he's absolutely legitimate. Anyway, he told me over the weekend that we are 100% negotiating to get Kaka. By no means assured that we'll be successful. But absolutely insistent that we're trying.

Don't believe for a second that he'd come, but we're certainly aiming high if this is the case!
Cosmetic surgery, now that is well left field, much better than "taxi driver" or "mate of mate of mate"!

Thought I'd back Stoof up as the nature of my work allows me to take more than just a very loose look at the fin stats.

The profit figure Stoof mentions is the operating profit, whoch doesn't take into account player trading and interest on loans. These included, we recorded a loss for the year to 30 June 2010.

However that really is only part of the picture. There is a saying in accountancy, 'profit is pure fiction, cash is king'. Basically, in a big enough entity you can manipulate the accounts in all manner of ways to inflate your profits, or reduce them in order to make tax savings. As Spurs are a PLC, they would be more inclined to increase the profit figure in order to encourage investment in the club's shares.

If we look at the cash picture in those same fin stats we see the club had approx £11m in cash at June 2010. This is reasonably healthy, however it is offset by £18m in bank loans. The part of the accounts which offers us direct insight into why the club need to haggle over a few £m here and there is the cash flow, which shows an overall cash outflow of £8m for the year. A net outflow of £28m is in relation to 'purchase of intangible assets', which translates as player purchases offset by sales. That so much of the club's cash position is dependent on player deals shows why the club have to be prudent when making purchases and sales and get the best deal possible at all times.

We're a very long way from being the next Leeds, but a wasteful few £m here and there each summer and we could find ourselves in trouble.

Good analysis but those accounts relate to F/Y ending June 2010 I believe. Spurs banked over 30 mill euros from UEFA cash distribution in last years accounts. On top of this came the new shirt (twin) sponsorship deals. With little outlay on players in this period I suspect our cash position is actually very healthy right now.

But prudence in the transfer market is key. levy knows there will be bargains around at the very end of the window and clubs with 'cash' will benefit

So in his latest post POTL says "There will and are signings". Is he hinting that we've already got someone signed that we haven't announced? Or does he just mean Brad and the two youngsters?

this is especially important since the FFP regs will come into full effect in the near future and any of our new contracts (post-2010) will be taken into account.

We really are in good shape for FFP, far better than most.....scant consolation for some, but good for the future.

Err, was it Leeds? Let me guess... it was Leeds wasn't it? I'm only guessing though because you 'finance first' guys never mention Leeds. This I think is the first time I've ever heard Leeds come up in a debate about finances.

It's honestly such a tired and trite argument. We get it. Leeds over spent and it cost them. Well done, you've made a very nice analogy.

However, if you honestly think that Levy softening his approach to negotiation or spending out on a half decent striker in one of the last two transfer windows wouldn't have delivered the extra few points we needed for champions league football this season then you're deluding yourself. Still, at least we've got a healthy balance sheet eh? Maybe we can have an open top bus parade down the high street to show it off.

Apologies for locking the thread and double apologies for coming to you all on this subject once again but this one of our busiest times of the year and if we can't bang the drum now when can we?

Have you donated to SC this month?

*Puts on Clint Eastwood voice.

I know what you're thinking. "Did he lock this thread six times or only five?"

Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself.

But being as this is a .44 Banstick, the most powerful Banstick in the world, and would ban your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question:

Do I feel Generous? Well, do ya, punk?

The struggle to keep going goes on month in month out and I know some of you donate regularly but I also know a lot of you only frequent SC during the Transfer Window and I hope most of you decide to stick around. After all, this is the bestest Spurs site there is.

So if you've a shilling or two lurking away in that paypal account of yours which is only really used for that secret Babestation or Television X account that the mrs doesn't know about, then we'd like to see it!

Every little really does help! So click on the logo below, or on the Donations link at the top of your SC screen to help us keep this site the place that it is.
