An Excellent Window! Here's why...

I couldn't believe the negativity on here this evening.

I think it's been an excellent window.

(1) We managed to keep all our best players: Modric, Bale and Van der Vaart. This was despite not having Champions League football to offer and in the face of intense interest - and general expectation we would sell - in relation to Modric. Great credit to Levy here for not giving in.

(2) With a strong team that managed to finish fourth and fifth in the last two seasons, we still managed to improve our first eleven considerably with the addition of three key players in Friedel, Parker and Adebayor. A more consistent, reliable goalkeeper; a tough Footballer of the Year midfielder, who will drive the team on in key matches; and the kind of complete striker we've been crying out for. Great signings.

(3) We managed to get great money for some players who wouldn't have featured in our first eleven this year - Palacios, Crouch, Hutton, O'Hara, Keane - and to temporarily offload others on expensive wages - Jenas, Bentley. We made a significant profit in doing this, which can only be good for the club.

It wasn't a perfect window of course - it never is - I would have liked if we could have signed Cahill and would have preferred to offload Pav rather than Crouch. But it was a damn good window overall. Particularly when you consider Arsenal are massively weakened - anyone thinking Arteta and Benayoun are adequate replacements for Fabregas and Nasri are kidding themselves - and when so many of Liverpool's signings (Henderson, Adam, an aging Bellamy) are of questionable value. And when you consider these two latter sides will be our main rivals for a fourth place finish, I'm fairly optimistic anyway.

I was initially disappointed but on reflection feel it wasn't to bad a window just concerned if we have our usual glut of injuries we will be in trouble, however we do have a very string squad and have the funds in jan if we do need to strengthen. Good post

Think in January, we will see Ancelotti and some top notch signing

Let's not forget the exciting young attacking players we've brought in.

I think it's been a good window, not an excellent one.

1) Keeping our players was important. Modric did a Berbatov but hopefully now he has no choice but to stay until January he can start to play again.

2) I don't think we've considerably strengthened at all. I'm scared to mention Friedel as it will start another dull Gomes focused thread but if Brad is better this season it's not going to be by much. Full strength I wouldn't have Parker in the team (Sandro, Modric, Bale, Lennon and VDV). Adebayor is the only real strengthening and it's a loan signing so not a long term solution.

3) We've sold the players we should have but surely we would have got offers earlier.

We're two games in and HR now has the job to gel our new players asap. I can't believe for a second that the Parker deal was so complicated that we had to wait until the end of the window to sign him.

Friedel

Corluka Dawson Gallas/King BAE

Lennon Modric Sandro/Parker Bale

Adebayor VDV

If fully fit, that would be my starting 11. I'm happy with that. Shame we couldn't pull in another RM, CF OR CB. But if we aren't battling for 4th come January, then this lot have underachieved.

I think the main difference is that City have improved a huge amount and are now one of the best in europe. Utd look stronger and Liverpool look far stronger.

We seem to be ticking over which is fine, it just makes the new stadium all the more important.

Geniune sign of an ambitious club, being thankful we held on to our best players

It's a great window for sales, we have made serious money out of not very good players.

On the other hand, we have not really stengthened.

We could have done with another central defender, Bassong has his highs and lows, but look how we struggled when Dawson, King and Gallas were out last season!

We really needed a striker. Yes, we got Adebayor, but come next summer that leaves us with Defoe, Pavlyuchenko, Cauliflower and Kane. Hardly a strikeforce which is going to strike fear in the opponents eyes!

And Scott Parker. Never been a fan.
