An Excellent Window! Here's why...

I couldn't believe the negativity on here this evening.

I think it's been an excellent window.

(1) We managed to keep all our best players: Modric, Bale and Van der Vaart. This was despite not having Champions League football to offer and in the face of intense interest - and general expectation we would sell - in relation to Modric. Great credit to Levy here for not giving in.

(2) With a strong team that managed to finish fourth and fifth in the last two seasons, we still managed to improve our first eleven considerably with the addition of three key players in Friedel, Parker and Adebayor. A more consistent, reliable goalkeeper; a tough Footballer of the Year midfielder, who will drive the team on in key matches; and the kind of complete striker we've been crying out for. Great signings.

(3) We managed to get great money for some players who wouldn't have featured in our first eleven this year - Palacios, Crouch, Hutton, O'Hara, Keane - and to temporarily offload others on expensive wages - Jenas, Bentley. We made a significant profit in doing this, which can only be good for the club.

It wasn't a perfect window of course - it never is - I would have liked if we could have signed Cahill and would have preferred to offload Pav rather than Crouch. But it was a damn good window overall. Particularly when you consider Arsenal are massively weakened - anyone thinking Arteta and Benayoun are adequate replacements for Fabregas and Nasri are kidding themselves - and when so many of Liverpool's signings (Henderson, Adam, an aging Bellamy) are of questionable value. And when you consider these two latter sides will be our main rivals for a fourth place finish, I'm fairly optimistic anyway.

Good post. I think although alot of us are disappointed it's important to see the positives as well. Added on to the list above I'd have the signings of Ceballos and Coulibaly showing that we're looking to the future as well as the present.

I think what people will find disappointing is that the money was (or should have been) there to make it a really good window and there are a couple of areas where we pretty clearly need strengthening.

But que sera sera. Hopefully come December we'll have strung a few results together and everything will be looking rosey.

We can not compete with Man Utd, Chelsea or Man City. Man Utd and Chelsea because they're always going to be in the top three and City because of their ridiculous wealth, so comparing us to them at the moment is not very fair.

However, compare us to Liverpool and Arsenal and I think we've had a very solid window.

Yes, Liverpool have spent shit loads of money, but would any of their new players make our starting XI? I don't think Adam, Henderson, Enrique or Downing would, they'd make our bench but not our first team.

And look at the scum, losing their best two players in Nasri and Fabregas and replacing them with two players who also wouldn't make our side.

I believe Adebayor and Parker would make both make it into Arsenal's side and would certainly push hard for a place at Liverpool as well.

I would say we have a better side and squad than both Arsenal and Liverpool BUT we now have to learn how to play as a team, something both of them sides have the potential to do very well.

I can't believe for a second that the Parker deal was so complicated that we had to wait until the end of the window to sign him.

Clearly he was second choice and we were holding out hoping for Diarra, common sense approach.

You make good points but the bottom line remains....everybody here knows in their gut that Arsenal and Pool are ahead of us now and will finish there at the end of the season. We have lost any mental edge and are back to square one.

Shocking window.

I've also come to the conclusion it was a good window. All the silly rumours got our hopes up and when they didn't come off we felt we had failed when in reality we added some quality to our already very good squad. When we can field Sandro and Parker (And I believe we must play them both) we will be very hard to beat.

If anyone on here thinks we have done well this window are sadly deluded, we have gone even further back this window.
In total we bought a keeper who could play for our masters team, a striker on loan and a cheapish signing in Parker so how the fuck can that be good.
It's clear that levy has no ambition at all and our one season in the champions league will be our last, I wish he would fuck off and let us get in ambitious owners who will compete in the Market.
I will not be looking forward to this season top eight is now where we are at.

I think a key point in seeing whether this was a good window or not will be the form of Modric. The main plus point has been keeping him in the face of Chelsea's onslaught but if he plays like a sulky child for the rest of the season then I think we'll struggle.

The more luxury the better then if they come with the ability of VDV.

North v South
Rollup your sleeves or fancy dan
Labour or conservative
Harrods or Poundland
The eternal question.

This is the sort of knee-jerking that I think the OP was trying to avoid.

How could our signings be good? Well we've got a better set of keepers now than we did last season, Parker was player of the year last year and Adebayor is a great striker and the fact that he's on loan doesn't change that.

And no ambition? Really? So Levy's attempts to get us a bigger stadium and his building of a brand new training complex show a lack of ambition do they?

Finally top 8? Go on then tell me...who from outside the top 6 now has a stronger squad than us?

In my opinion, better squad than Liverpool, marginally better than Arsenal. Levy has given Harry the tools to compete for the last Champions League place. It's now down to him to get them playing.

I'm surprised by the extreme negativity. If you'd asked everyone what their No.1 priority for the window was at the end of last season it was:

GET A PROPER No.9 IN DANIEL

And lo, we got Adebayor - exactly what we wanted.

In every other aspect we strengthened the team, reduced the squad effectively and retained our best players.

It's a great window, isn't it?

All in all pleased with the window, a bit disappointed that we didn't get a nice surprise yesterday, but the signings we have made are definite improvements.

Can't help thinking that the snubs en-masse from players wanting £100,000+ p/w has changed Levy's thinking. Realising that being able to spend £35 million on a player is useless without the wages to back it up, it seems as though the priority now is raising money for the stadium as soon as possible.

This window appears to have been about strengthening for as cheaply as possible and clearing unnecessary expenditure as well as retaining our top players with the view to staying in and around the top 6 whilst keeping competitive.

It would be a big gamble on Levy's part, but should we still be competitively competing at the top end of the table once the stadium plans are put into action, we could suddenly become a very attractive proposition.

A world class striker and one of the top Prem midfielders last season for 5m... pretty good going if you ask me.

That's so simplistic that it's laughable, particularly when the majority of the money they spent went on two players from Spurs that most on here were happy to get rid of.

They didn't spend £20m on quality players though did they? They bought what we considered our deadwood.

As has been mentioned already, it is clear that we cannot compete with Man Utd, Man City or Chelsea in the transfer market. Equally, we do not pay the same wages as Liverpool or Arsenal. Maybe once we have a larger stadium and/or the potential for regular CL football this will change but at the moment, I have to agree that Levy is doing the right thing.

Our first XI, if fit and motivated, is certainly as good as Liverpool's or Arsenal's first XI. In fact, the only players I'd want out of those two squads are Suarez and Vermaelen. It's now down to Harry to get the best out of our squad. If he starts moaning, which he most likely will, then we just have to wait for him to leave. And I think Levy knows this.

Much depends on Modric getting over the 'blues' and Adebayor developing a good partnership with one or two of VDV, JD and Pav. Once Sandro and Gallas are fit again things will improve further. Yes, defence is a concern but we do have four centre backs who, on their day, are all premiership quality.

It was essential to clear out the dead wood. I don't think any of us regret the departure of Hutton, Bentley, Jenas and Keane. Yes, I too would have retained Crouch in place of Pav but getting up to 12m for him? Silly money. His missed header against City a case in point. Adebayor is a far more impressive player - and will play a lot of games this season. Yes, I would have loved Rossi or Llorente but at £30m? Not sure. And not with Harry as manager.

As for the concerns in midfield, I hope we do give the youngsters a chance this year - especially Livermore and Townsend. Perhaps Carroll too. And of course we have our secret weapon in Souleymane Coulibaly!

COYS!

It does seem that Levy got his way in the end. The feeling is that Redknapp is on borrowed time

Pleased with the outs other than Palacios which is a stupid move. Glad to get Ade in even if it is only a loan, Coulibaly signing shows that we're still on the look out for kids with great potential. Parker and Friedel are poor signings considering they're replacing the superior Palacios and Gomes.

Can anyone tell me the length of Scott Parker's contract?
