Could AVB Be Another Ramos?

After watching Arse v Chelsea, I am wondering if Villas-Boas will make the grade here in England. He seems to have tried to totally export his template of success with Porto on a squad of players with totally different characteristics.

It has brought to mind of Ramos who also thought he had achieved a winning formula with Sevilla, infact he said as much in an interview once, and looked to import it in its entirity with us. AVB's Porto swept everybody aside and played a similar style to Ramos' Sevilla, and both sides relied on swarming and overwhelming their opponents with wave-after-wave of attack.

Obviously Villas-Boas speaks excellent English, giving a huge advantage over Ramos in working here, but I wonder if his lack of management experience could prove costly for him in a club with an extremely demanding owner.

Dan Ashcroft was raving about him before he arrived at Chelsea, so it's possible.

Too early to write AVB off as a failure but I must admit I'm surprised at their defensive frailties.

Still believe he is a quality manager who can achieve great things in the game but time is not a commodity you find under the Abramovich regime - perhaps he will be be in the running to succeed Harry after all?

Writing off a manager/team after 9 games...... Do we ever learn.....

AVB is trying to change the way Chelsea play aswell as introduce more young blood into a ageing Chelsea team, that will not happen over night.

You can't coach dummies. That's why players love Harry's run about a bit "tactics". They can't comprehend anything more complicated.

I'm not surprised at all. Every time I saw Porto last season (admittedly only 3 or 4 times in the wafer cup) they were extremely open with a defensive line miles up the pitch. Villareal should've been out of site before thay were blown away by Portos attacking play.

I don't like how the British have coined the term AVB, it should be restricted to Dutch players instead.. VDV, RVP, KJH, MVB, RVW, RVN..

Ricky van Wolfswinkel, scored another goal today and has a big chance of winning back to back player of the month in Portugal.

Dutch forwards are in pretty good form, aside from VDV and RVP in the prem there's also KJH who has 21 goals in 18 games for Schalke this season.

AVB has got Chelsea playing decent enough stuff in possession to suggest he is a very talented coach. However, I do think that it may take him a while to (a) adapt his own approach to the EPL and (b) achieve the necessary balance to have an 80+ point season in the EPL.

So they could be there for the taking this season, but unless Roman gets trigger happy and gets rid of AVB after 1 season (which I don't believe he will) I think we shall see a lot of this guy at the top of English football and see him win a few honours.

The problem AVB faces is that he has a philosophy in the way he coaches and the way he likes his teams to play, but Chelsea want instant results.

It's a marriage doomed to fail in my opinion. But by fail I mean not challenging for the league or CL, but they'll still qualify for the CL - quite comfortably IMO.

Question is, if he is sacked before the end of the season and both he and Ancelotti are available to replace Arry, who would we prefer? I'd like to take a punt on AVB.

I like AVB a lot, I like what he has to say about football and for a guy who is 33 you can't help but admire what he has done in a short space of time.

Chelsea need to give him time, he is entirely changing the way the play and renewing an ageing squad into a more energetic, dynamic unit - I can't see Lampard/Terry lasting that much longer as first names on the the team sheet because of this. He is trying to make them defend higher up the pitch - but with a defence including Terry and Ivanovic it is difficult because of their lack of pace, and because it is always difficult to adapt to a different way of playing. We saw this with Ramos, and having the right idea about the game and implementing it are vastly different things, it was always likely that AVB would have teething problems in this respect.

Well it would be funny if Chelsea lose a cup final thanks to an own goal off John Terry's face.

Not exactly the same as Woody's effort, but that's all the deserve.
