I really think tonight we showed just how good this formation can be. I love the way Van Der Vaart, Modric and Bale are interchanging in this formation. With Sandro and Parker keeping a tight ship it allows those 3 the freedom to roam. They effectively have a free role (like Harry said post match) but the workrate allows them to help defend when we lose the ball.

I know Lennon has been great of late but if we can rotate him successfully with those 3 then is this the future formation for us?

It did work quite well and it's nice to have multiple formations that work as there's that 3-5-2 Harry tried too. He made todays formation sound like a 4-3-2-1 rather than 4-2-3-1 in his post match interview with Modric-Sandro-Parker in the middle and VDV and Bale supporting Adebayor in a free role.

At times we were playing:

Sandro
Modric Parker
van der Vaart Adebayor Bale

with them all moving around and swapping positions (except Sandro). It was a joy.

I thought it was more of a 4-3-3 with a fluid front 3 (Bale, VDV, and Ade). Ade definitely wasn't fixed in the CF position. Modric was also predominantly in the middle.

Same. Adebayor does have a habit of ending up hugging the LW touchline

Parker was getting ahead of Sandro more...but it looked like several different formations through out that!

But yes in answer to the OP, Sandro, Parker and Modric can all accomodate central positions and it worked a treat tonight, very pleasing when a lot of us have been calling for this.

Similar to the way Man.City played when they came to the Lane and destroyed us earlier in the year with Barry and Toure(Parker and Sandro) Silva,Nasri,Aguero all moving like the 3 of: VDV,Bale and Modric and they had Dzeko as our Ade. Very fluid, hard to put a real formation on it just 'Total football' and a total joy to watch!

It was more 4-3-3 today really, but yes the idea of Parker/Sandro behind the creative hub showed its worth today.

Tonight it looked like a flexible 4 5 1......rather than any other formation Modric was largely central, Bale mainly left and VDV usually right. I'm not saying that we played a flat five because Parker and Sandro were usually deeper than Modric giving the depth. The two given most license to wander were VDV and Bale but the latter more noticeable because he is more athletic and gets around the field more easily. The last time I can remember Spurs doing anything resembling this was 87 when Allen was up front on his own.

I don't think we played one set formation last night, it was a mixture of about 3! Great management by Harry once again.

Agree with that. Normally we play:

--Parker--Modric

Lennon--vdV--Bale

-------Ade

but last night and the first half against Chelsea we played:

--Parker--Sandro--Modric

----vdV-----------Bale

-----------Ade

I thought yesterday's formation worked largely because Norwich went with Hoolahan behind the front two, which meant they played without any wingers.

Our full backs didn't need cover from Bale & VDV. This allowed Harry to let the pair roam free. Had Norwich gone with their early season tactic of Pilkington & Bennett, I think we would have been forced to go like for like, with one of VDV or Modric to play in their less favoured wide position.

Swansea will play with wingers so if we go 4-3-2-1 again, it probably won't be as easy as last night.

For me last night was definitely a 4-3-3 rather than a 4-2-3-1.

Sandro was sat just infront of the defense and behind a midfield two of Modric and Parker. Parker was just as far forward as Modders most of the time.

I enjoyed the interchange between the front three. However, for me this worked mostly as a result of Bale and Adebayor's mobility.

VdV played pretty well (in fact he had more passes than any other player - even Modric - which came as a surprise to me) but for me his best position is definitely in the hole behind the striker, whether in a 4-4-1-1 or 4-2-3-1/4-5-1, as he simply doesn't have the pace and stamina to play as one of a floating front three.

as others have said i dont think we had one set formation but it seemed that the deepest midfielder most of the time was sandro as he sat just in front of the back four. Whatever it was it worked well .
