I just dont see why Daniel Levy would take the risk. There will almost certainly be a change of manager in the summer, prices are high, or players are unavailable and in his mind possibly most importantly there's no real difference to be made from signing another player. We're not going to win the league and we'll probably finish top four. In his business, risk averse mind, what's the difference between third and fourth?

Third = Automatic CL qualification

Fourth = Qualifying round for CL. Massive difference if we don't win the playoff.

Hmm, not sure he'd gamble £20 million plus on a striker that the new manager might not want in the summer for that potential difference.

If we sign Tim Flowers as player-goalkeeping coach the recent cryptics will be fully vindicated.

I thought it might have something to do with Paul Weller, as POTL's been quite musically cryptic before, but he's an old mod rather than a new striker.

Also the percentage of the CL Pool money a country receives is partly split on your finishing position.

The year we're in it that money was roughly split like this Total Pool money £84m which is split 50/50 on league position and number of games played out of total your country playes

So League position money was £42m....

1st Chelsea £16.8m
2nd Manu £12.6m
3rd Goons £8.4m
4th THFC £4.2m

So if we were to buy a striker that could get us say 2nd rather than coming 4th that's £8.4m extra in cash before we've kicked a ball in CL

This is true but if you weigh in the extra wages and the 15-30m price tag there wouldn't be much profit left... Hence signing no one and coming 5th would probably be equally financially rewarding! I think the long game is more about selling a well run profitable club for levy and Enic, which if we have regular champs league footy will be more saleable...

Things look to be rather chaotic and if you apply some common sense and logic, it's unlikely that we will sign anyone.

We probably will be active, in the last few hours - probably more of a show than anything to say look we have tried.

Fact remains, lots of our 'bigger' targets turn us down.
I would imagine even if we won the league the likes of City, Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal would still be a better draw for players.

Sad state of affairs considering we play attractive football, have a loyal fan base and have a nice looking kit.

But, the area is pretty shoddy, the stadium is small (in comparison to the others), and the money is shit ;-)

Players are and have been turning us down, fuck knows what the real reasons are, but can you honestly seeing us buying an already claimed world class centre forward?

They are the most expensive buys, on the most expensive wages. Looks like we would be going for young, to breed. Or very old, to cover.

:)

the critical line!

excellent post and so true.. we will never sign a 30 million striker nor a truly world class one

But to get regular CL footy we need to invest

The numbers I quoted were just 50% of the pool money

If we were to come 2nd and then go on and make say Qrt Finals again we could expect CL money of about £40m plus 5 home ties of probably £2m a game so £50m additional income

I don't think the "Look, we tried" approach will work a second time. We had that last time out, when we were apparently wandering around Europe with a bagful of £35m willing to spunk it on Rossi or Aguero, or whoever it was.

So, no, not this time.

I'm really surprised we didn't move for Leandro. I understand we need to get rid of Pav first but it seems strange we didn't even bid this window.

All I can think is that we're confident that we might be able to sign Ade on a perm in the summer so we're going to wait until Rossi or Remy might be available as they are higher in the list than Leandro.

Well how about signing an up-and-coming superstar forward?

God knows we've been in the mix for quite a few.

God knows we've had _ _ ? windows to identify one and sign.

We've simply dithered - even Harry has admitted that.

What will be will be - but we sure have made it hard for ourselves.

I suggested before that we could upgrade on Pav with a house plant, so maybe we're actually signing a sunflower? It would probably have a better work ethic.

to be honest when i said we will never sign a 30 million top notch world class striker in his prime or otherwise i really meant i dont think we would even sign a 20 million pound striker or even break our trnsfer record.. personally i think its all talk and until we actually have a brand new stadium built and been succesful on pitch at same time will we see a chance of signing such players. for now like u say its buying strikers around the 15 mill mark and depending on what manager signs him will always be somewhat of a gamble

The one comment I have to make is.. how do you know what a three day old cheese toastie looks like, nedley? They are obviously too delicious to just leave that long.
