Realistically how long will we keep hold of him?

Gareth Bale.

He's our best player by a mile; how long do you feel we will realistically keep hold of him?
And when inevitably he goes, how much will we get? I don't want to hear any 50-60 millions; because although I feel we should as he's so integral to us... We won't.

I genuinely have no idea how long he will stay... Seems to be enjoying his football for us and still learning his trait as his becomes more and more Ronaldo-esque by the day.

He's already turned the heads of the biggest clubs in the world but he doesn't seem to be making noises about leaving and tbh he's 23, why would he yet.

I feel we could hold onto him for another 2 seasons or so IF we secure CL football.

Some argue he's a homely Welsh boy, just had a kid; would this deter him from up-heaving his family and moving?

Just been pondering this question since the FT whistle.

What do you guys think?

why fret over it, enjoy him while he is a spurs player
Not fretting at all, it seems he's quite settled here. But no doubt Madrid will start their shameless tapping up in a season or two...

I personally think we'll end up getting 35 million ish.

Thanks for posting a shit thread after we win.
It's not me being negative it's just something I was musing... Nowhere in this thread have I just gone on an incoherent rant or moaned how it's so unfair he's going to leave us etc..

Wouldn't call it a 'shit' thread.

Depends on the strength of the interest. If Madrid or Barca make serious bids for him this summer then he'll almost certainly leave imo.

To take the OP at face-value:

I think two seasons is easily feasible, maybe three if we are regulars in CL - at the end of the day, he would still only be 26 YO in 3 years time, just going into his prime. As has been said, he has the reputation of being a quiet, homely lad with a new family, and I am sure that if he takes good advice and uses it well he will be well aware of all this.

On the downside, I don't think Real will have to start any shameless tapping-up - everyone who has anything at all to do with the meeja began that process a long time ago (straight after Inter, away, I believe ).

On the other hand, I know some folk are dismissive of the relationship Levy has pushed Real into, but I don't really see why. And I know some alarmists immediately claimed that it would mean real could cherry-pick our best, starting with Bale, but I see no reason to assume it is something that will be so totally weighted against us. Dan Levy was the one pushing for it, and he's no mug with these things, and Real were the ones wanting to be placatory and making concessions. So, Real might well get their mits on him eventually, but I don't thing they will just throw caution to the wind and bully us to damnation and back.

In regard to price: It is pretty difficult to say, as we don't know how buoyant the market will be in (a hoped/hypothesised) 2 to 3 years. It is also very possible that dastardly Dan will be having bits and pieces of price in kind (that's a favourable track on a few Real players to you laymen ;)) both pre and post any deal. That said, at current values, given the price paid for Modric, and the premium put on goal-scoring, I would be thinking of something North of £40 million as realistic, even allowing for any favours we could wring out of Real in other ways. Might depend on just how close to being comparable to Ronaldo (Greasy, not Fat) he is looking. I doubt Levy would sell inside England and I doubt he would be short-changed if he is looking close in quality to someone that Real paid £80 million for.

If we can get back in to the Champions League I think he will give us another season after this one.

As for his price? No doubt in my mind it will exceed £40m. I have a horrible feeling that he will stay in England though. City will be all over it. If that does happen the price could sky rocket.

I want to know what we are getting out of this deal with Real. If we lose Bale to them eventually what they fuck have they done for us? apart from lining Levy's pockets that is so far.

Cheers for the insightful post and I agree on the large part.

I think Madrid is his most likely suitor (except the problem of Ronaldo occupying his favoured LW role which is an interesting conundrum)

Also if the deal was struck with RM, I would expect to see a player thrown in too; I would love Contraeo or Di Maria (unlikely).

A few games ago (I know it sounds fickle) but I was saying I would take 40 million and run... However if he carries on his explosive run of form; we could see his value rocket north of that. (Also we need him to carry on playing so well as it seems to be winning us matches) I don't constitute as a selling club if he does go because we still have quality players and manage to retain them; would just be a bit gutting to consistently see our best players go but hey we haven't got the incentives the huge clubs have.

I would be happy let's see... In a realistic and not fantasised world; to get 2-3 seasons out of him. I feel if we received around 40 million we could get in an inevitably inferior winger but one of quality and with hunger, for a fraction of that price.

But I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get there; until then - He remains ours! I really hope we don't suffer a huge transfer rumour saga all summer ... Again.

Levy is using our transfer funds to buy a brain washing machine. It'll come good, you'll see....

Then no one will leave. Ever.

I have been pondering exactly this question and I suspect he may leave at the end of the season. Just too much speculation this season. Hopefully he will stay next season and then he will be Madrid or Barcelona bound.
