Yeah I think there will be the obvious changes of Dawson and Lloris back in for Gallas and Friedel, and I guess Holtby will come in if Lennon is out.

This will be a tough game though. They have had an upturn in form and got some confidence at the moment. I would be perfectly content with a point from this fixture.

I couldn't agree more.

An alternative viewpoint:

------------------------- Lloris ------------------------
Walker ------- Dawons --- Vertonghen ------- BAE
-- Holtby/Carroll ----- Parker ---------- Dembele --
------ Sigurdsson ----------------- Bale -------------
------------------------- Defoe -----------------------

Siggy and Bale to work the channels and Holtby/Carroll added in a deep-lying position to give more tenacity/passing ability in midfield against their midfield heavy side. Having a more centralized attack would benefit us more as I believe their weakness in defense is right up the middle.

This game against the Scousers is going to be bloody hard - Just wish Lennon is back. I rather park the bus against Milan..

Lots of tough decisions to make.

1. Who comes in alongside Vertonghen to try and deal with Suarez?
2. If Lennon is out where are we going to get any width from?
3. Defoe or Adebayor?

My answers:

1. Dawson deserves to play on recent form, but he'll need to be protected by Vertonghen and the central midfielders. He can't be left 1 on 1 with beaverface if possible.

2. We probably have to bring in Holtby for Lennon (if he's out) but if that happens I think Bale may have to start provisionally on the left otherwise we'll have the risk of getting very narrow.

3. Really don't know on this one. For all his critics, we've been doing well with Adebayor upfront and I don't think that's a coincidence. Having said that, he needs to do a lot more and Defoe looked pretty sharp last night and actually did reasonably well with his back to goal. His finishing was a bit off though and that's really where he should be getting the advantage over Ade. I think possession will be key in this game and Ade offers more in terms of hold up play (even when not on form) so I think I'd go with him, but it's a toss up really.

1. Who comes in alongside Vertonghen to try and deal with Suarez?

I've been mulling this, but ultimately it's the team that nullifies someone like Suarez, not an individual - and besides, Caulker and Dawson have shown themselves to be vulnerable on the turn so I'd go Dawson for this one, who I think is showing his best form in a Spurs shirt right now.

First you need to stop the supply so you match them up in the middle, and that means someone has to get on Lucas in the deep like Welbeck did to Alonso on Wednesday, and Parker and Dembele will look after Gerrard and whoever else they have in there. We must remain compact too. if you let Suarez drop between the lines, turn and run at you then it matters little if it's Dawson or Maldini - Suarez will have you on toast (similar for them stopping Bale). He's a wily little bastard though and he'll pull wide too, and so the wide players need to be diligent in tracking back and keeping close to our FBs. So, keep compact, press the ball well and cut off the supply line, sounds tough but luckily enough we've been doing that superbly under AVB.

I was thinking that we may have to start with Bale out wide too but if this is the case, I think we'll see Defoe and Adebayor, which I don't mind greatly, I just don't want to see Adebayor on his own. Although I don't agree with Ade offering more in holding the ball up, not going on the Arsenal game anyway, I didn't see the West Ham game so I don't know what he was like then.

Merson needs to stop sucking dick for crack and watch a game now and then.

I think he needs to recheck his facts because I swear there aren't any Europa league games on a Sunday...

Edit: Silly me, I should read more carefully. He probably means playing a league game on a Sunday due to playing Europa midweek. :D

Interesting. We all saw that Holtby wasn't really comfortable as a winger, he likes to go deep and touch the ball. But AVB will probably stick with his 4231, with Holtby on the right and Siggy on the left.

I don't understand the Dawson can't mark Suarez stuff. Suarez is a pretty similar player to Tevez and if you'll remember it was Tevez who said that Dawson is the best defender he's ever had to go up against in the PL.

If anything I'm worried about Vertonghen, who I think is very overrated right now. He looked very slow and off the pace a couple times in the West Ham and Arsenal games.

One of those games I wish we could play our best two of Daws and Kaboul for.

They must be worried about us. We are a shit hot team these days. Going to be a good game but we've got it in our locker to beat anyone at the moment. I trust AVB and think he'll get us the 3 points on sunday!

Gotta disagree about Verts, he is bloody brilliant, he got man of the match in said Arsenal game too. Check this article out, very interesting read (y)

In terms of Sunday, Dawson has to and will start imo. 13 starts for him this season and his record is outstanding 9 wins, 4 draws and 0 losses.

Has Lennon definitely been ruled out?

You got some statistical evidence to back that up?

My Liverpool supporting co workers are oddly confident which makes me
edgy.
Win this and I will believe we are going to make champions leauge.
Lose and Arsenal can start to claw back.

This game will be very tough and I know Liverpool have looked a lot better of late, they were good against Arsenal and City in recent weeks but the hammerings of Swansea and Wigan have got them a bit over confident IMO. Swansea quite clearly had there eye on the Cup final and made seven changes and Wigan were Wigan - either pretty good, or comical - the latter that day, and they still could of had a few against Liverpool.

I have a nasty feeling they'll win this late on 2-1, but I would be happy with a draw from this. I can't for the life of me see them giving us a pasting though, not if the team play like they've done recently.

Some Scousers seem to think 4/3 - 0 o_O

From the moment Daniel Sturridge joined them in January, Liverpool have become a different outfit, with physicality, directness and ruthlessness joining Rodgers' slick Barca-lite passing. I've had the opportunity to watch Liverpool (with Sturridge) twice at full-match length on television and they look a side transformed. Now that they have another goal threat to take the focus off Suarez and to occupy the attentions of defenders, the result is that Suarez is rampant and they are scoring 3-5 goals in nearly every game. I can't recall one player making such a difference to an English side since Eric Cantona joined Man Utd so many years ago.

I'll be pleased to come away from Anfield with a draw and I'm really looking forward to what ought to be a very high-quality football match with a few goals in it.

As for the team, I think the OP made plenty of sense.

Dude, you just compared, on some level, Eric Cantona to Daniel Sturridge.

Agree with the OP re the best team but would have have Holtby on the left and Siggy on the right, ie swap them around

how about

Lloris
Walker Dawson Vertonghen BAE
Parker
Naughton Dembele
Holtby
Bale
Defoe
I've been wondering how naughton would do as a winger as i think his game is more offensive than defensive. also we don't want to use siggy too early as rodgers with his knowledge of the player from swansea could limit his impact. also i think that holtby is better playing with space in front of him than with his back to goal so a space behind bale and defoe (preferably at the middle/top end of the second third) would be good for him. bale and defoe could player closer than this formation suggests
