His record of 25 goals in 28 domestic league games last season is absolutely immense.

However he's only managed 2 goals in 21 European games (over the last 3 seasons). Compare this to Willian who has 9 goals in 23 European games (over the last 3 seasons) for example. Not sure this equates to a 25 million pound player.

There's a definite drop in productivity when playing against top opposition.

I'd be very surprised if we were really interested in him as everything is pointing towards us playing 4-3-3 next season (with Paulinho) and Mkhitaryan is very much a 4-2-3-1 player...

Snarf is correct that signing Martin would allow us to play 4-2-3-1

Well we basically played that last year. Has seemed like we were moving away from that formation with targets this summer.

All about squad depth really though. Even if we play with the double pivot having 3 top players in Paulinho, Sandro, and Dembele would be excellent.

I love the way that people are talking automatically that we'll definitely have Sandro, Paulinho & Dembele to choose from at the start of next season!

Last time I checked Sandro was still recovering from a serious knee injury & Dembele struggled at times last year with a recurring injury. At least it looks as if Paulinho is almost done. As for this Armenian fella, he reminds me of a Modric type (not as good in that role granted) who is bigger, stronger & scores goals so if it's a goer.. yes please!

So the latest ITK says he's been in a London hotel and that his agent is Mino Raiola, who is close to Baldini.

I'm taking this with a lorry full of salt, purely on the basis that Mino Raiola is close to just about every chairman/DoF in football. The guy whores his players out like they're....well...whores. :cautious:

But Willian (who I really like btw) hardly scored in the Ukranian League, you could argue that Willian has a serious drop in productivity against lesser teams by the same logic and maybe there is an argument on both counts, but equally a lot it may be that the European club scouts picked him as a goal threat and not Willian and so he had more attention from defenders which allowed Willian more space

My honest opinion - Mkhitaryan is not good enough for 25million.
Has a poor first touch, bad distribution. His strength seems to be - he can score when he is one on one and also seems good in box - but all these came in weak Ukraine league.
In champions league he has played 21 games - scored 2 goals & 0 assists. Those 2 came against weak side FC Nordsjaelland- by far the worst side in competition.
If we really have 25million to spend rather spend on Lamela or Eriksen or Benteke.

The price is excessive but he has key attributes that we sorely lack with the main one being his football intelligence. Stats don't always tell the whole story.

The more I think of him, the more he reminds me of Kagawa.

Jonathan Wilson wrote a good aticle about him.

Good player, but if we are going to spend that much on such a player i would rather we get bernard. Surely 25 mil must be enough to get him and sort out the third party business.

We lack creativity, so we should look for a player that can add that playing from an advanced left position.

Or Lamela

I think to prise him away from Roma would cost considerably more, if we were talking that kind of money and we could get him for sure he would be (imo at least) a better option if maybe not as versatile in terms of playing deeper if needed but certainly in an attacking front three

I agree, I'd rather have someone that can dribble and be unpredictable.

I'd take Bernard over Mkhitaryan for sure... Bernard's ceiling potential is crazy

Yes, definitely. While I am a big fan of Mkhitaryan I'm not so sure he'll be able to match his last season if he were to come to us. For me, Bernard is the opposite. I can truly see him light up the BPL for years to come!
