Toby Alderweireld is absolutely not as good as Jan Vertonghen

I am certain there are a few central defenders in the Eredivisie better than Toby Alderweireld

AVB has long said he's most comfortable with four CBs. Bearing in mind Daws, Caulks and SuperJan are going nowhere, it's not exactly a major problem area. No one is saying Kaboul is being forced out of the game. If Kaboul plays less than 30 games this season, I'll be surprised. We can rotate these four - hence, presumably, why we're looking at the next generation and the Tinman (if I see any of you fuckers get that on your shirt before me, I'll ave' ya).

At the risk of really setting things off, it's worth noting that Sandro played several times for Inter as a CB and apparently did well. If we slot in Hall or other youngsters on the bench for cover, then it may be a risk, but a calculated one worth taking. And there are other areas where big money can be better spent.

I know this won't come as shock to anyone, but I honestly believe we will suffer if we keep relying on Dawson. Even more so if we are going to adapt to AVB's preferred high press, high tempo, pass and move, high line ethos. He just isn't conducive with any of those facets.

Did you see any improvement in Daws last season? He didn't stop those huge diagonal balls, but there was a marked drop in the number of them. I bet AVB has worked him hard and he's earned the right to at least show us he can develop into a more technically accomplished player.

However you rate him, it seems likely Dawson will be at the Lane for at least a couple more seasons. And if Caulker develops as seems likely, Mikey D is probably one of the best 4th choice CBs in the Premier League.

I love Dawson, but I too was hoping we could somehow add a more solid, yet mobile defender. I don't think that it's that lofty of a request. He may be our captain, but I do believe competition should always be explored for every spot. Vertonghen is perfectly cast in the role he played last season at CB. We simply need that rock in defense that can account for being put on an island and asked to mark the bigger strikers of the EPL out of matches. I'm still holding out hope that Caulker will develop into that. He's got the body and the ability, I just think he needs to improve his technique and also continue to build up the strength as he was thrown around a bit last season.

Kaboul could do that for us, but with the uncertainties around his knee, you have to start to wonder if we should look at either selling him or Dawson to bring in a CB similar to them, but without the checkered injury past.

I've got a firm belief that ultimately we will be left with a squad capable of challenging for honours this season
Really good vibes coming from the club

Where is that optimistic rating? I am still waiting on Bale to sign this new contract that a lot of ITK went on about straight after the season ended.

To be honest, I have grave worries about Caulker too for similar reasons. He's not a hoofer like Dawson, and he's far more comfortable on the ball, technically proficient, but he's far one paced and slow on the turn.

And to be honest, I didn't see much of an improvement in Dawson. I thought the back end of the season he was terrible.

So Beece, just to recap. You're not a massive fan of Dawson or Caulker, or our very own Kyle Walker. Yet you would be happy if we signed Micah Richards as an option?

Micah Richards?

Micah...Richards?

My-car Richards...?

A Dutch friend thinks we should go for a guy called Douglas who plays in Holland and is Brazilian, never heard of him, any good?

I totally disagree with this. He was at least as good if not probably better than Vertonghen at the end of last season.

Of course he was, I think it was widely accepted. Vertonghen and Dembele appeared beyond criticism even though they were both gash towards the end of the season.

Anyway, lets just get Micah Richards.

Micah Richards.

Fair enough!

I disagree with the severity of your comments but can see where you're coming from. Reckon Caulker needs a boss of a CB next to him to keep him honest. I don't think his errors or occasional sloppiness are anything more than lack of attention and if he had a leader beside him, they would gradually be knocked out of his game and we'd have a magic defender. And he's not exactly shabby now.

doesn't do it for me but I have a friend who goes to Twente games, he likes Douglas - for them, anyway. Not sure if he's able to get better. They got him a Dutch passport as well, the thought was that he'd then leave to somewhere like England where the criteria for foreign players without caps is strict. He has almost moved to Newcastle on a couple of occasions, including just before Joke Innear arrived. He cancelled the bid.

On the deck Vertonghen is first class but he's got to improve and become more commanding in the air. He was at fault for a lot of our headed goals conceded in the last quarter of last season.

Edit: Vertonghen has great hair!
