But hasn't been that effective in his career and is rather predictable player and once PL defenders get to know him, well. At the moment I would play Townsend, but if I had to choose wether to keep him or Aaron in the squad. Aaron easily.

Like at QPR?

People love Lennon because he is 'exciting'. I'll take boring and effective over 'exciting'. We need more goals and assists, not someone with the ability to skin the occasional player. I know people love Lennon, but can't believe people think we can't do better. He has had plenty of time to improve, now it's time to move on. With Lamela and another first choice wide player + Chadli and Townsend, we have players for now and the future.

You think Chadli and Townsend have surpassed Lennon? Based on what exactly?

I think we would be silly to let Lennon go just because we have some new toys. I think the competition will do them all good.

Less so compared to Andros
See, I'm not sure I buy that - what we've seen even in the embryonic stages this season is a player in Andros who can skin a defender down the flanks, can show poise to cut back and stand it up or to switch inside and unleash thunderbolts at the 'keeper.

Lennon's effectiveness is overplayed by virtue of the fact that he gets into great positions, which he can be credited for to get into, but time and again the wrong option or pass is played.

As it stands, I'm interested to see GF elaborate on Lennon's possible suitors and who else we look to bring in but if we do secure our targets then Lennon's place in the squad is severely threatened and we can look to recoup a decent fee on him still.

I'm wondering if Hulk could also play the central striker role to cover Soldado if we let Adebayor leave?

Yes, just added that to my post mate.

I really am starting to think our interest is very real in him - and I'm now starting to believe Lennon will be sold (I'm against it) but I can see AVB's thinking here.

We can play 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 with this group....four beasts.

Then...the four attacking positions. Soldado, Hulk, Lamela, Eriksen (or similar), Chadli, Townsend, Holtby, Siggy.

Hulk could cover Soldado, even Chadli could at a push. I think we'll keep Defoe though.

Lennon on top of Bale's fee is going to allow us to do all this no problem, not to mention freeing Ade's wages as well. We need that creativity in the form of Eriksen though. And I still think Siggy will be sold. So that would leave Eriksen (or someone of similar ilk) and Holtby to provide the craft.

I would only let Lennon go if:

a. We signed Lamela and kept a hold of Bale

or

b. We signed Lamela and another wide player such as Hulk, while Bale leaves.

If we only sign Lamela and Bale leaves, it would be a massive mistake to let Aaron leave the club.

I don't think that will happen.

Here's a thought, if we sell Lennon to a desperate club eg Newcastle for say £12-15million and buy Hulk for £30million, would people be happy with that?

I'm not advocating either per se but when it's put in black and white in front of you, i can certainly see the thought process in it.

i've been defending lennon for years but the palace game was final straw for me, he's no longer a youngster and i think what you see now is him he wont ever get any better, in that palace game it drove me mad that every time he beat their left back he'd look up for 3 hours till he got back or would try that silly chip pass he does, with townsend and chadli it looks like somethings gonna come from them and they have more creativity and unpredictability to their games

I think that if that's possible, that's what will happen. Not a fan of Hulk myself but AVB clearly enjoyed working with him and he was pretty effective in the Porto team.

I remain unconvinced it is possible though. Unless the rumours of all these mahoosive wages the likes of Willian and Hulk were just palpable bollox. Depends just how unhappy Hulk is I guess. If he's willing to take a pretty significant drop in wages then maybe.

I have to say Chadli has done nothing for me so far. Certainly nothing to suggest that he has already surpassed Aaron.

I agree Lennon is a very frustrating player. But we just seem a little more dynamic to me when he is playing, maybe its what he does when not on the ball. I wouldnt say there arent better options out there, but I dont think those options are currently at the club.

Jason Burt has been reporting tonight that a fee of 86m (pounds) has been agreed for Bale. The article is in his thread.
