With the exception of Lloris there isn't a truly world class player in that French team and they were really unimpressive during qualifying, looking very disjointed and in-cohesive, but all of a sudden through circumstances ( injuries/omissions etc) they are starting to look like a team. They have a really good balance and team ethic. They have no superstars but are playing some very cohesive and bright football at times. They have a great group and a superb draw until the quarters/semis where they would almost certainly meet Germany/Brazil respectively I think.

Could easily add these to the dark horse list IMO.

Just a heads up, BBC's World Cup internet coverage is awesome! They have various player cams and an overhead tactical view to select from, I've never seen that before (y)
Sky use to do before but then they slowly got rid of it all including fanzone

Argentina never get their squad right. Absolute disgrace that Zanetti never got chosen for political reasons on '10 and '06, now it looks like they could be doing with Banega in the middle offering vision and tempo.

Mascherano PLUS THREE centre backs behind him ? Meh.

Begovic going from playing for Stoke to playing against Messi is like going from shagging Lisa Dingle to shagging Megan Fox and Cheryl Cole

I don't think it was political, I thought it was out of superstition

Centre midfield for me. Every move seems to bypass it.
Yea I tend to agree - for all Argentina's attacking options, they really do lack a Modric or Pirlo to offer an option from the back and a springboard from defence to attack.

I used to like the fanzone stuffbut I've never had a sky subscription of my own so this is new to me. BBC is far from perfect but their Olympic internet coverage was great and they seem to have built on it and are using it for this World Cup. At least the licence fee is being used for more than eastenders and crappy talent shows :D

The balance isn't right in this Argentina side - cant put my finger on it.

Agree. It's the 352. 433/4231 would suit the players they have much better. Maxi Rodriguez just isn't working in this set up.

Should be something like:

Perez Mascherano DiMaria

Messi Aguero Levazi

or maybe

Gago Mascherano

Rodriguez Messi Alvarez

Aguero

It was political in '10. Maradona wanted domestic players and didn't want players with long standing influence. Even more bizarrely the manager in 06 thought Zanetti was done. On both occasions he was straight back in the national team after World Cup failure.

One of the biggest World Cup tragedies of selection, imo

Monaco's second choice keeper starts for Argentina in the world cup
Monaco's first choice keeper is back up for Croatia
Croatia's first choice keeper use to play for us but never played a game
Bosnia's first choice changed his mind when signing for us when he saw Croatia's first choice keeper sign on the same day after being concerned about his game time

They been playing 433 throughout the whole tournament but Gago was injured today

Higuain
Aguerro ----------------- Messi
Di Maria
Mascherano ----- Gago
