Argentina fans: "Messi's better than Pele."

Brazil fans: "Five time champions."

 Gotta love the banter of football.

Really? International goals, goals per game and international honours - Pele wins. Messi only beats Pele in goals in a calendar year and domestic honours. Until Messi performs at a World Cup (and I mean against decent opposition and not the likes of Greece & South Korea) Pele will be considered the better player. Also, hasn't Messi only scored one goal in a World Cup? Messi is a more entertaining player to watch but Pele was the better forward.

That being said, he definitely has the potential to surpass Pele. He just needs Argentina to have a good World Cup campaign.
If football was solely judged on international football, then yes. I hear people say all the time that Messi can't be considered the best of all time because he doesn't deliver at international level. I look at it in a different way. For 12 matches over his career Pele showcased his talent on what was - at the time - the top stage in football, the World Cup, and his talent cannot be denied. But I don't think Pele can be called the best of all time because there is SUCH a limited sample size.

Each and every year Pele's stats at club level in Brazil begin to look less and less reliable. I feel they hold about as much scope as the ages of the Cameroon team in the early 90s. No doubt he scored plenty (at what was at best a medium level) but for me the tag of best player of all time can't be given to a man who delivered at the top level in only international football. That is why Maradona beats Pele. One delivered at the top level of both international and club football. One delivered at the top level of international football and performed admirably at the level he reached in club football, however how admirably is unclear.

Club matches make up, what, 80-85% of a player's matches? For this reason I would also argue the case of players like George Best, Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo above Pele because top performances at international level are outweighed by reaching the heights of the club performances of these three. Pele when he played was a bit of a mythical being, this incredible footballer who popped up every 4 years and was the best around but was unseen by the masses during the intervening years. But stories spread of the miraculous feats that took place in his local leagues. I think I'm going in circles now but I think the lack of public availability of his club performances just made him seem more... legendary.

Fair play to the Argy manager. He's held his hands up and tried to correct some mistakes.

Gago hasn't quite lived up to his name but he can ping some passes about on a good day. Good to see Higuain on as well.

Don't know why they went 352 but this is the formation they used in the qualifiers

I remember going to watch a River Plate game and they used to chant "maradona sucks/smokes cock" nuttiest crowd I've ever been in.

Pele, for me, was a great player in an unbelievable team.

Goalscorer extraordinaire in a league that was inferior to that of the Europeans but his influence has never been greater than Messi's IMO.
Messi needs to do it on this stage first, fel.

Argentina have been pretty woeful. They don't have a recognised ball playing central midfielder, and the only attacking options at times seem to be the wing-backs.

Bosnia on the other hand have been excellent. All comfortable on the ball, and look a serious threat from set pieces. Besic (no 7) has been their standout performer, marshalling Messi superbly.

Lionel has lost the ball 7 or 8 times already
It's mental; they were much more fluid and cohesive in recent friendlies.
