Think we opted for Dier, personally. Probably wanted a 4th/5th option at CB that is young and then a CB option that is ready to partner Vertonghen (Musacchio?).

Heard that we quite liked both as options. Talked to Notts Forest, thought we had agreed a deal, then NF changed the goalposts, so we talked to Eric instead.

I think Lascelles is someone the club probably think has some potential, but not maybe an outstanding prospect, and would only take a punt on him at the right price.

Interesting if it's true we dropped interest in Lascelles for Dier. Prices aside, means the scouts/Poch/Baldini must rate him quite highly for us to forego the homegrown option for him given our issues with foreign squad count. Of course, Dier for the time being could register as a youth, but the possibility (could have also had to do with nothing other than price) we forwent the future benefit of an English HG for the sake of Dier's talent is certainly worth noting.

I wonder how much Forest wanted for Lascelles? When we had interest in him a few years ago and JJ thought the deal was almost done, the touted fee was around 5mil, Dier appears to have higher potential and at 4mil this just seems like better business.

Yeah it's entirely possible the decision was primarily financial, and you make an excellent point bringing up Jj's old fee.

We wouldn't need to register Dier for the next 2 seasons and by that time, HG won't shouldn't be a problem with Bentaleb, Kane, Davies and Archer adding to the HG squad.

Very true, and we have no idea what will happen between now and then, but I was more so thinking of the issue with keeping the senior foreign count under the line. We have a lot of young, talented, foreign guys in this squad, so I don't see most of them leaving anytime soon. As such, it's entirely possible we'll be straddling that all important number 17 for the foreseeable future, especially if Poch wants to make more foreign acquisitions in the future.

Let us hope, nonetheless, that the scouting team did rate this kid quite highly indeed. Loved the bit of ITK, referring to Dier, that confirmed these decisions are entirely done by a team now of the scouts, Poch, and Baldini. Nothing short of delighted to hear it.

I wonder why we're in for fall these young CBs and yet we farmed Hall out on loan in June.
