This is called negotiating, not low balling...both parties trying to get the best deal for themselves, certainly isn't a Spurs exclusive, even though it may seem so.

In fact you look at nearly every transfer these days, clubs agree personal terms with players before a deal is struck.

We do tend to drag it out longer than most clubs though. The closer the deal goes to deadline day the more desperate the selling club gets as they can either cash in for less than they wanted or keep an unhappy player who could effect team morale.

Plus, Levy saves on the wage bill

Very grateful for your itk as always neo, but it comes from the Southampton side of things right? I think we have to be very skeptical of any info coming out of there right now. There's clearly a PR game going on with this transfer, and I think any news we get (from either side really) is probably going to be heavily slanted. I'm not saying Levy didn't play games with this, but I think certain people would be spreading those rumours whether he did or not.

Spot on mate, i only get Saints info. And as for taking it all with a pinch of salt? ofc you do that's the game =)

Cant see us paying the asking price which I believe is around £25m.

For me they will be left with a very unhappy MS - In the Spurs sceme of things its unfortunate but not that important.

I think there's enough noise around the idea we made a pitifully small offer to believe it. And it's one thing to say 'that's business' and another to think 'are we even serious?'.

We are well stocked in CM and not looking like selling anyone any time soon. It has to be a big doubt as to whether this gets done.

@liamje28 @SuperSpurs1882 nothing to do with Levy atm. No need to ride him on this one .....yet.

I'll trust JJ over anything coming out of Saints right now.

If we could get Morgan with no net spend with sales or swap, I think it might still happen.
Levy will not lay cash out ATM - we will be hemorrhaging cash for the stadium from now on.

So a swap or sell to buy for me is the only way it will get done. This could well apply to MM if we can't ship out anybody, I'm not confident of either MS or MM.

With the extra tv money we should spend a little this window. I think we need to trim the squad first though.

I can't see us spending that much on him without knowing what happens to Dembele, Paulinho, Sandro.....

Capoue and Bentaleb should be in the plans. But then there are these three, Carroll and Mason, and even Holtby played there. If there is no movement in getting one or two of the three out, I guess we won't buy him. But that would hurt me a bit. Lovely player MS...

'Pitifully small' could in fact be something in the region of £15m-£16m. If Levy was willing to pay that for Dembélé, I can see him feeling that would be a fair bid for Schneiderlin.

I agree and whilst on ocassions he secures good money and deals he sometimes misses the bigger picture ... like when Bentley's value dropped from 16 million to zero and we missed out on CL money over the Nelson/Zaha joke window.

Disagree with bentley, he was all about the bigger picture. DL had an asking price and refused to drop - this isn't him penny pinching, its about reputation. Teams know now that when they bid for a player they have to pay near his asking price, whether he'll go for free or not. DL couldve got 5m for Bentley but he chose to let him go for free instead to keep that reputation solid, and its probably made us way more than that with deals like livermore ect

I would of thought we made in the region of a 17m bid for MS... which Southampton believed to be 10 M short of their valuation.

Personally I think we should move on, we have enough options in midfield. We need another CB plus another goal scoring winger.

All to do with outgoings imo. Manage to ship a couple out and then the negotiations will start in more earnest.

However of course wasn't there also talk about a Spurs player heading for the south coast as part of the negotiations?

Whatever deal is finally done will have no business affect on future dealings imo. This is business at the end of the day and it would be stupid to cut off your nose etc. Modric didn't stop us selling Bale to them. We might well have done a little better out of it but we still dealt. Principals don't count for a whole lot when money is concerned in football.

It may be a "fair" bid in his eyes, but it's never going to be a fair bid in Southampton's eyes considering the money they've received for the other players they've sold.

I think it's clear that unless we can shift one of our CM for a decent amount, then we won't be signing Schneirderlein. We can't expect Southampton to do us any favours, no matter how pissed off Schneirderlein is.

I kind of see your point in terms of reputation but I still feel what we've lost in terms of playing personnel and not striking whilst the iron is hot would dwarf anything he's made on Livermore and co... For a period we were that close to breaking into the top tier and I fear it'll take many millions more to close that gap again.

It always makes me smile when I hear Spurs fans labelling Levy as some sort of shifty, chiselling cheapskate, and accusing him of not spending enough money on the squad. I think perhaps those people should look at the figures and find out exactly how money has been spent on the current squad before laying into him.

Agreed, but it's a starting point, and if Schneiderlin digs in his heels Southampton may conclude it's best to cut their losses and split the difference if we can come up with a face-saving formula.

I suspect supporters of many teams feel this way about their club. We follow our own clubs' transfers a lot closer than those of other clubs, naturally, so are more aware of those that drag on. Other clubs are likely having their own 'sagas' that we don't pay any attention to until their announced. City uploaded a video of Mangala weeks ago and still haven't announced him! United with Vidal, Hummels. I'm sure it's not just us, we're just more acutely aware of it.
