Bentaleb never hides, in fact the last thing anyone can accuse him of is being anonymous because he's always showing for the ball. He doesn't shirk his defensive duties either. He was dispossessed and made a couple of bad passes but still made near double stambouli's passes(a whooping 106 passes with a 91% accuracy) Considering his age he should earning rave reviews.

It would be interesting to what percentage of those pasess went backwards or sideways.

Mason was better in his cameo, Naughton over the 90 and Stambouli in the first half.

I can't see how anyone would give him MOTM tonight.

There were worse, but there were definitely better despite his all round effort.

Seriously, Stambouli got subbed, Mason only played 30 minutes, and Naughton was ordinary. MOTM for Townsend may seem odd, but any other alternative would have been more puzzling. He has a lot of potential, but he needs to be more patient, and the fans needs to be more patient with him. He has the same birthday as Bale - that has to be a good sign!

Naughton has been solid if not spectactular in the games that he has played at RB this season. With Walker out I think he is a better option than Dier at RB at this moment in time. Would like to see Dier moved to CB with Verts but it won't happen.

The two 'contributions' Townsend have made in his spurs career:

A attempted cross that went in against Villa last season.

And tonight he shanked a shot horribly and it was turned in for a goal.

That sums him up for me.
A bit harsh, on a night when nobody wanted to take responsibility and put in a performance he constantly showed for the ball, took players on, crossed a lot into the box with mixed results and hit plenty of shots. Compare that to Lennon who tracked back a bit I know who I'd rather have in the team.

He does need to improve and his decision making is often a big problem. For someone that strikes the ball as cleanly as he does he needs to hit the target more and work the keeper a lot more. Andros isn't perfect and still needs to improve a lot but on a night when Paulinho and Lennnon playing along side him offered the square root of 0 I think the criticism is a bit unwarranted.

He' s been descent, and I'm happy with that, but it wasn't noticeable enough to be MOTM.

Said before I really dont understand the Townsend hate.

Was great to see him, Mason, and Kane celebrating together.

Actually looked like it meant something to them.

Not saying they are world beaters but for me theres not much between these players than some of the more expensive signings we have made eg, Paulinhio, Chadli, Capoue, even Soldado and Lamela (NEg rep away!!)

...maybe I was watching a stream of a different game - in the game I saw:
- Townsend was getting done up and down the pitch by Fox, and repeatedly took wasteful shots
- Lennon worked hard all over the field and was our best player in the 1st half
- Stambouli played several loose balls and did not do enough tracking back on the run ending in their shot off the bar
- Naughton was actually effective for once, and may have done enough to warrant starting over Dier
- Soldado was invisible until Townsend's shot hit his foot
- Mason was total quality and lifted the whole team when he came on
- Bentaleb was decent, but too sloppy to displace Dembele
COYS
interesting points but dembele is easily replaced based on what he did against WBA , he was slow at moving the ball out from midfield and kept the ball to long. Bentaleb has a better passing range and got involved a lot harassing the opponent. He showed a lot more energy. I could see Mason though displacing dembele and mason playing alongside capoue which he did nearly all pre-season.

Just looking through some of the stats and a few stand out.

As already mention Mason made 5 key passes in his 25 minutes on the pitch which is quite impressive. Secondly was Townsend with 14 attempted crosses but only 1 classed as an accurate cross (not sure how you can decide whether a cross is accurate.) Our starting 11 had 15 shots and only 2 on target (Naughton and Soldado with the shots on target.)

What I would really like to look at is the pitch map of our passing to see if I confirms that for the first 60 odd minutes there was still too much sideways and backwards passing. Not to mention our 2 attacking mids were receiving the ball with their back to goal and playing it straight back to the person that passed them the ball.

Tbf I saw 3 decent crosses from townsend

I don't get all this Townsend praise. I thought he was awful to be honest. At his most frustrating worst. Shooting when he should have crossed, dribbling when he should of passed, poor touch, unable to play quick interchanges with other players.

I really hope we sell him to Southampton in Jan before they realise that he isn't actually as good as all the England hype suggested.

Which doesn`t say much for our other attacking players tbh, Townsend for all his faults was by far our most lively and threatening player last night.

I think Townsend does the twirl round on the end of a broom thing for training. Wouldn't make sense if he did fuck all else. Just staggering the level of consistency in doing the wrong thing again and again and again.

This is why a Mason should be targeting Bentalebs/Dembele place. Bentaleb is not a defensive midfielder, but he cant make something happen. We need something to happen. If there is no option, then make an option. Thats what we have sorely missed since Modric left. Modric used to make options by carrying the ball, turning a player, but he made options happen. Dembele can do this, but needs to be better at releasing the ball.

Mason isn't in the PL Squad :(

Edit: Just been informed that he is. Have to have a word with my original self confessed football guru

and people are complaining that Soldado was anonymous. What do you expect with the 3 stooges behind him!

Are you able to point out when? because all I saw was him lumping the ball into the are. Long deep hanging crosses are not good crosses.

No I can't point out the times, I've got a life, but I saw 3 dangerous crosses into good areas from him, not that anyone was there to get on the end of them. You're clearly down on him as a player and would no doubt dispute it if I did find them, personally I call it as I see it

We need to sell, he's beyond help now imo.

He has got drive and determination and that stands out when the rest of the team is in brain-dead mode, so I'll give him that. I just think he's been ruined by that England experience where he was the belle of the ball, he can't get his head out of that mindset now.

The irony is that if he just passed simple more, tried to beat less than 5 men at a time and looked more for cute through-balls when cutting inside instead of shooting, amongst other things, he could be a very valuable player.

Fed up of being frustrated with it, willing him to sort it out. Just sell.

Please tell me what we created prior to the the subs coming on?

Nothing.

This is where people are getting confused. Townsend's performance was an energetic one. He tried, and that's the least any of our players should be doing. So in that respect he was one of the better performers out of a very poor bunch for the first hour of the game.

So whilst he tried in the effort stakes he actually didn't really produce anything of note. Alarmingly, given how much he saw of the ball, its a damning indictment how little he failed to produce with it and how little we failed to produce as a team as a result in the first 60-65 minutes of the game.

I'm honestly staggered at how people are rating him MOTM. That's not slating a player, its just pure bewilderment.

I agree especially you throw Bentaleb into the mix too. Great to have young club trained players coming through.

I'm more disappointed by the likes of Soldado really.
