While I'm sure others won't see it this way, I am looking at this season as his true "first season" in the EPL. Last season, he really never had a run of matches to find any sort of form and to really get acclimatized at all. I'm more than willing to let him ride out this season and evaluate him once it's over, after he's accumulated enough minutes to make a real determination on his future potential for us.

At the moment i say play him all the time. The more he plays the more he'll settle. Generally, I don't think him playing and not being at his best hurts us too much, as long as he doesn't defend too often lol.

Lol. He had a nightmare last season, but he has actually done okay this season in his first real season in the PL and he has shown at times that he can play in this league. He needs to stop trying to do too much and cut out all the flashy dribbling when it is not needed. That comes as he continues to settle, which will only happen with PT. Once he settles down a bit, I think he will really shine in this team. To sell him now would be a huge mistake.

Well Tom Collomosse tends to be pretty good with his info but this is arguably just speculation at this point. I agree with the sentiment that THIS is effectively Lamela's first season and he is showing glimpses of real quality. He has a LOT of work still to do but there is massive potential there.

I don't see us selling him anytime soon, unless Poch doesn't rate him and I genuinely believe that he does.

Collomosse in the first line says that it's from Italian reports, so I doubt it's his info :)

He also goes on to say there is little chance that he goes in Jan. Beyond that he will be susceptible to the same treatment as any of our other players... play badly you get sold to a Italian team... or Hull... play well and you get sold to Real Madrid.

The positive for me (on top of his Europa and Cup performances) is that he genuinely shows desire and hunger, even when things aren't going right. This is already better than 80% of the rest of the team.

what i like about lamela

- he does seem to be happy to get stuck in a physical battle and does seem to have decent body strength in shrugging off challenges / winning the ball back

also... my personal observation is that he does try to release the ball as soon as he receives it and then run into space and ask for it back... he only dribbles (in my observation of cos) when 1) he wants to create opening for a shot 2) there were no options to pass and release quickly

Completely agree with your second part and I think you make a knowledgeable observation there, but while I think Lamela's improved, he looks to me to still be struggling with how physical the Prem is. Still a bit too much going to ground and looking at the ref with his arms up.

But he has massively improved. The shoulder checks he was putting on Benteke that made him push right back had me very impressed. Benteke is a big dude, and the will to try and physically attack him shows much improved commitment to our cause the will to get stuck in.

Lamela has a good opportunity this upcoming summer to really build upon the muscle he built up last summer. I think with just a bit more "armor," it would go a long way in helping him to achieve his full potential.

Massive potential and the kid should be afforded plenty of time. The effort is there, the talent is there in flashes - we can all see it.

More composure will come with more experience and becoming more confident.

I'm pretty certain he'll come really good providing we're patient.

When he plays seems he's trying to hard and not natural, on many occasions yesterday the easy ball was on , he chose to try a little trick time and time again, like you said maybe if he gets the time to flourish he will be more composed and relaxed on the ball. I hope so ,at the moment thou he's very frustrating to watch.

this is probably going to be a very unpopular opinion but... what the f*** does lamela actually do? the initial hype has warn off for me. I honestly can't think of what he offers the team, aside from the obligation to play him due to his hefty price tag, and a trick play or two (like the rabona). i seriously can't remember ever watching him and thinking to myself "this is what a world class player looks like" or even a "this kid has the potential to be a superstar." as things stand i would bite someones hand off to get anywhere near what we paid for him as a transfer fee.

perhaps someone can educate my pleb mind as to why he has potential and what his strengths are, and why i'm wrong....

I'll try to answer this with the disclaimer of someone who didn't want him in the first place, and who felt we should have spent that money elsewhere.

The kid isn't putting up numbers, but those "trick plays" are about the only thing we have atm consistently opening up defenses. It's the potential threat and unpredictability he provides that has been such a benefit to us. As he has gained in confidence, he has done this more and more consistently.

I still think we should have spent that money differently, but nonetheless I've been very pleased with how well Lamela has come on this season despite our troubles elsewhere. He has an obvious will to succeed, and has a very creative footballing mind that we're only just now tapping as he grows in confidence. I look forward to the day when I can regret wishing we had not bought him, as only just recently have I started thinking it may be inevitable.

I don't disagree, i just think he's young enough to grow.

He can create chances and we only have about 3 players who can do that.

The lad seriously needs to bulk up. He's embarrassingly lightweight at times.

UTD have always conditioned their players properly and we should do exactly the same.

Really feel a few squats, deads, pull ups and bench would help him both physically and mentally.
