The problem with Vertonghen is that in reality he isn`t really very good at his primary job, i.e defending.
Yes I agree with you on that plus he seems to get miffed too easily and quickly

I genuinely think Gallas is the second best defender we've had in my lifetime (mid 90s), after Ledley.
Gallas was an inspired signing but Judas, Naybet and Woodgate were all better imo.Yep.
I don't many of us appreciated his true worth at the time, but he was excellent for us.

I'd rank his performance against the scum at the Emirates when we beat them as one of the best I've seen.Campbell's fair but I feel Naybet was only good comparatively and Woody had no legs.
Gallas against AC Milan was one of the best defensive performances I've ever seen.

Tottenham transfers: West Ham risk seeing rivals gazump them for Basel centre-back Fabian Schar
Hammers have opened the door by putting player moves on hold until they know who their manager will be next season PLUS: Spurs eye German starlet
Tottenham are ready to hijack neighbours West Ham's move for Basel defender Fabian Schar - as the Hammers have put transfers on hold until they resolve their managerial situation.
West Ham have been keen on the talented 23-year-old for some time.
The Swiss centre-back's contract expires this summer - although he does have a one-year option, triggered if certain clauses are met.
Schar has Champions League and Europa League experience, and has 12 caps for his country, including two appearances at the World Cup finals last summer.
@Bus-Conductor - You rate him a lot, IIRC?
