If Harry ever wanted out...

If Harry wanted out, should we let him?

  • Yes, by all means.

  • OH HELL NO!

actually, someone mentioned Modric, didn't we keep him for a season after it was clear he wanted to leave?
Yeah we did and Man U kept Ronaldo for a season ultimately those players could not be kept, you count a season as keeping a player I guess, but it doesn't count for me.

We kept Darren Anderton when he was courted by man Utd

He said that he was told they had bid for him but sugar and (Francis I think) pressured him in to signing a new contract and he said its a decision he regrets and that he should have signed for United

Other than that pretty much every big player who has been wanted by other clubs (ruling out king who stayed as his injury prevented big clubs actively pursuing him) has eventually been sold after a degree of haggling and in modric's case even a season of prolonging the inevitable
But he didn't want to leave bad enough otherwise he would have stood strong and not signed the contract.

they were all under contract were they not? you tell them they're staying. see, not impossible.
Players have the power, they decide whether they hold to a contract or not. Theoretically you can tell a player that he has to stay for the length of their contract but it just doesn't work like that in practise.

Only if a club outside the Premier League was willing to throw stupid money at us, as happened with Bale.

Are you serious? What about Rooney who was one of Everton's own? I'm sure there are other examples too, I can't think of any. Plenty in the lower leagues, Bale obviously left southampton, Lennon - Leeds.

As you say, Bale and Lennon were leaving clubs in a lower division (and both clubs were at that time in financial trouble) - not at all comparable to Spurs at this current point in time.

Rooney's position wasn't all that comparable either. He was at a club who needed the money and so they made no great effort to keep him, they were just disappointed that the offer came in so early in his career and then left it up the player. The player then had a choice between staying at his hometown club who were flirting on and off with relegation at the time he left, and joining the champions. An easy decision to make once the decision was put in his hands but he wasn't stamping his feet asking to leave. Everton could have kept him for another year or two had they not been so keen to bank the transfer fee on offer. In all the cases we've had of a big player leaving they have forced our hand, rather than us opening the door for them to leave. So, again, the situation is not comparable.

I don't really understand the point of this thread/vote as their are numerous variable not captured by the opening question. Every situation is different and in most cases unless we're dealing with Real Madrid (and same would probably apply to Barcelona) we seem to resist selling unless the player forces his way out by being disruptive, either publicly or in private, as was the case with Berbatov and Keane. In those cases its really was not the club's decision to sell and Levy has tried to be smarter with contracts ever since. At this point in time everything we know about Harry and everything we've heard about his connections to the club and area suggest that he is not comparable to the likes of Carrick, Keane, Berbatov or Bale, as none of them had a connection to the area and, with the possible exception of Keane, all of them obviously saw us as a stepping stone to a Real Madrid type club.

I say with a huge degree of certainty that Kane will be at Spurs for many years, barring a fall-out with the coach. So just enjoy him as any Liverpool fan right now will tell you that home-grown talents with a genuine passion for the club and the talent to match don't come along often.

Then why write that essay which was going nowhere? The question in the pole was simple with yes or no for an answer.
