A genuine defensive midfielder? At Spurs? The clubs are close to an agreement but his advisors want to wait to see who else shows an interest. The Goat hears that IF this happens it may well be a late one.

To add fuel to this Poch mentioned a 'private target' in the press conference today according to reports.

Hanging around to see if a player fancies us on the last day is a sure fire recipe for disappointment. If whoever it is is that luke warm about joining us, they're much more likely to stay where they are, I would have thought.

True on recipe for disappointment.......but what if the player has been told by his head coach he is not needed this season, will alot of top players stay and collect pay, ala a certain player in our CLUB?

But by waiting for them you also give yourself the opportunity of signing a top quality player. If we only sign players that are not courted by better clubs then us then very quickly we will end up with an average squad. It's better to be aspirational than just accept your position.

I'm sure we have back up options if Bender turns us down but they probably won't be anywhere near the same level of quality.
I agree with doing this for the reason you mention, but only under the condition that we have 2 or 3 alternatives in place in case it goes tits up.

I agree that it's frustrating but its probably the only way we'll get another VDV type signing.

I hate to say it, but VDV was well and truly a one-off! Right player at the right place at the right time for the right price!!
Hoping to recreate that situation would be nothing short of a miracle!

..........here's hoping i'm totally wrong though!

The funny thing is I get the feeling the likes of Austin are in a similar position to Berahino in looking for a better deal. I'm sure Berahino will hold out for a bigger move just as Schneiderlin did, but we may find Austin will hold out for a move to us and if that doesn't come off go somewhere like Newcastle instead. It's all about getting the best move possible for these players and I'm sure Adebayor is looking for a big move himself because moving from Spurs to Villa (without meaning disrespect to Villa) is a drop down for him.

On the defensive midfielder front I get a feeling of Deja Vu on that one, we may end up with another Stambouli on deadline day.

The alternative is to sign someone that won't be better than what we have! To Dare is To Do!

Sounds sensible yet with each passing window I have come to begin to think that what we need are players who want to come to Spurs.

THIS.

In terms of players signed in the last few seasons they seem to be the ones that stick and become good too. From memory Lloris, Vertonghnen, Eriksen and Chadli were all players who came to us as first choice options and were very keen to join the mighty Spurs!

BUT you also run the risk of getting no-one at all!
We all covet exciting players, top names or up and coming ones, but we need to be realistic at who we can really bring in!

We obviously have been given sufficient indication by Bender that he is interested in us - so it is a realistic deal.

Personally I would rather wait around for top quality than fill the squad with average players.

Agree with this totally .
Lets not be delusional about this - WE are a very god club, but we are not in the CL and we can't pay ridiculous wages as Liverpool do. Nor do we have the history or name that Liverpool do in Europe, with 5 European cups - with one being relatively recently.
We want the best players we can get - these players must be on the verge of being top quality, and therefore these players will also want to see if they can get a TOP club who are playing in the CL.
We can get players in earlier - but these will be prospects or players who are not at the top level. If they are young prospects - then will they want to move this early in their career and maybe only be a squad player rather than a 1st teamer at their current club.
Our best option to bring in the better players is to line up players who can improve our 1st team, and would be willing to consider us. If they don't get a better deal before the window closes we can bring them in.
therefore in my opinion, our best hope of bringing in the highest calibre players is to wait until near the end of the window.
As Joel points out above - why would each party not want the best deal for them.
Its not what we want as fans - but lets not get get our knickers in a twist that we haven't got the players yet....
All the ITK points to us moving in the right direction - lets just hope the moons align and we get want we want (for a change).
You're far too rational and pagmatic to post in the ITK thread.. GET OUT!!!

You would think that if a player wanted to see who else came in for them, their "advisors" would be out trying to drum up interest.

you ask a girl out (she's an 8/10) and she's not sure - she asks for you to wait a couple of weeks while she thinks things through.

Waiting while things are being considered is prudent but last ditch wooing gets you the Stamboulis of this world more often than not

I'm happy to wait for the last day if its a truly worthwhile player, what I wouldn't accept is a squad filler if the deal didn't go through.

I'm pretty comfortable with Veljkovic filling the squad spot if we can't get a top notch player.

Meh, whoever Goat's DM is, sounds like they will always be looking for a bigger team to come in. That is not the attitude I want to see here. I don't want a player who thinks he is too big for Spurs.

To be honest IMO we really need to get business done before the 1st day of the season. So many years have I seen us squander points early on due to the uncertainty. Players not wanting To play for us and going on strike or us not having the foresight to get replacements in so we are ready from the 1st day.
Points should be fought for in all the 38 games not 36 + 2 with our hands tied behind our backs. We normally go on good runs post transfer window.
We should ideally have these players bedded in through preseason so we are fluid when we go on the 1st day.
I'm sure things will be sorted come 1st Sept as the players mentioned are of the quality we can obtain.
