i am amazed that any of you thought it would be different. every june it's "lessons have been learned", every july it's "deals proving difficult", every august "clubs dragging feet", every september it's "we tried"

Berahino, N'ije, Werner all well and good but we are also in desperate need of some experience in the team. Youngsters are only great when they have old heads to guide them on the pitch. It was horrible to see how we capitulated after the goal yesterday, with no leaders on the pitch it could have been similar to last season's game had United turned up. We were the better team upto that point and there was no reason for heads to drop in the manner they did. Let's not underestimate the importance of experience and natural leaders.

Actually - and unless I've missed anything in the last 24 hours - all the ITK this summer has not pointed to one or the other at all.

I don't recall any ITK that mentions both in the same sentence, although there was one but that referenced 2 out of 3 (or 3 of 4) which referenced Berahino, N'jie , Werner. But i could be mistaken. I recall the cabbage card goat ITK and subsequent berahino ITK from multiple sources but none referencing the 2 together. Just my thoughts that ITK comes from differing sources and it could be that both are high up the list ? But maybe only one will be purchased? Obviously both would be lovely however. Looking like a long wait ether way, with info that WB are waiting on other bids and Saido giving the appearance of dedication (which is very professional under the circs)

WTF has fact got to do with it? "It's nothing short of absolute failure" is absolutely hyperbole.

Here's the facts:

Facts from 2014/15

With our two main strikers playing very rarely, and contributing 3 goals between them, we scored 58 goals. the 5th highest scoring rate.

We also conceded 53 goals - more than any team in the top 12, and the same as Burnley who were relegated.

Of the players we have sold for money (Paulinho, Holtby, Capoue, Kaboul, Stambouli, Chiriches, Fredericks, Hall) not a single one had scored a premier league goal in 2014/15. There's also a good chance that a few were amongst the top 5-7 earners at the club.

Nacer Chadli scored 11 league goals, despite the many attribute flaws he has that have been described on here this summer.

We struggled to cover our positions in defence more than any other area of the pitch

Facts from this transfer window

We've signed quality first-team options to cover/resolve our issues in defence.

We've sold half a dozen first team players who were restricting our ability to add proven talent to the first team.

We've made clear our intent to stamp out off-field issues which would affect squad harmony.

It isn't September yet.

I fail to see how that is "absolute failure". The biggest damage last season was caused by the problems we've addressed early, not the improvements we can make later. All of the ITK is linked to positions that we recognise can be addressed, so it's hardly like we're ignoring them!

Edit: Irony is the poster creating the broken record "Levy doesn't sign players" content marking my post as spam

Now it's "it isn't even September yet", a couple weeks ago it was "the season hasn't even started yet", and a few weeks before that "the transfer window isn't even open yet". There's always an excuse for the apologists.

We've repeated the same exact mistakes every single transfer window, and every 48 hour deadline given by an ITK is just another 48 hours closer to us watching Sky Sports News in disappointment as it emerges we bid 10m for Berahino, N'jie signed a new deal, Werner doesn't even exist and Pochettino thinks Dier's future is in midfield.

With the ITK so far, either we're fucking around with a lot of deals or there are hundreds of smokescreens (transfer window bingo). JJ said he thinks we'll be happy by the end of the window, but if we don't sign a central midfielder and a couple striker-winger hybrids we've fucked up once more.

So what if they didn't score goals? We've shipped them all out and we need to bring in reinforcements with that cash. Just because we scored 58 goals last year with that squad doesn't mean we can assume they will again this year. I'd be amazed if Kane can match his unbelievable return from last year. It's not fair that we lump all the pressure onto him and expect him to be banging in 20+ goals a year in the PL at his age. Eriksen doesn't seem the player he was a year or so ago, his goals dried up and performances seem to be getting worse and Chadli is so inconsistent you have no idea which side of him will turn up. If those three aren't performing, where are the goals going to come from?

We had absolutely no options on the bench on Saturday, bar Lamela (love him or hate him). I believe if we had one of N'jie, Berahino or any other type of forward/ winger we would have had a much greater chance of stretching United and nicking a goal, perhaps even the win. EnfieldYiddo says at this moment in time it's a failure. Obviously we've got time to bring in more, but we potentially sacrificed one point or three by not having someone who could add something to the attack vs United. I don't see how you can't see that as some sort of failure

So what's the point of assuming we have fucked up until we get there?

It's a terrible way to live your life, getting angry about things that do not happen. I'm all for people getting angry after the event and people may even have valid reasons - but they don't while things are still capable of being worked on.

Think you need to google the definition of irony...

I think you need a new dictionary!

Irony
a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often wryly amusing as a result.
i.e. "he spammed the thread up with hyperbole, but marked the on-topic response as spam"

Hyperbole
exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally.
i.e. "At this very moment in time, it's nothing short of an absolute failure"

Because his fret was all about attacking options (i.e. goalscoring). They contributed nothing, barely played, took up wages we could spend on better attacking players, if you prefer that statement.
The rest of your post is very pessimistic, it's like saying "where are Swansea's goals going to come from since they sold Bony - Ayew is unproven in the PL" or "How will United score goals if Rooney gets injured".

Hard to argue with comments made here regarding the current failure to address adequately problem areas in the squad and whilst it's such a tired and cliched line, it will be on reflection come September time whether we have been proactive enough in recruitment to formulate whether we will likely have success this season or not.

Trouble is, history does indeed favour pessimism and/or panic buys that are subsequently deemed deadwood at more or less the first opportunity to offload.

Obviously youth is a prominent factor now but we can't possibly rely on Alli, Pritchard et al to solve all our woes and to have essentially one striker going into a season is frankly absurd!

I was discussing the current incomings and outgoings based broadly on ITK .. You were giving me the statistics of goals scored by our midfielders last season amongst other shit.

You were completely off topic.

Bring in Berahino and Njie, suddenly things look a whole lot brighter. All previous recent ITK suggests these are progressing.
Add in an Illarramendi type CM (not previously ITK linked, but known to be available, could be the 'unnamed CM' we're waiting on to decide his next move).
Low and behold, things would look considerably better.
Let us not forget, we have not sold any of our key players in the run to 5th last year. The bulk of these players will surely be better for the experience going onwards into this season.
We have only sold those who added very little to our squad.
Not all doom and gloom.

What attacking players? We haven't signed anyone! That's the point.

Considering Swansea have actually signed two strikers this window in addition to Gomis and United have spent £200m in two years, they've both tried to address their issue. Whereas we're all wanking each other off because we've got rid of Kaboul and Capoue
