I live in Sweden outside Malmö. Our local team Malmö FF just qualified to the group stages of CL for the second year in a row By beating Celtic. Biggest star is Markus Rosenberg and Jo Inge Berget. Both being players who didn't make it in BPL.
My point?
Does it take million dollar players to reach CL?
Does it take big name signings and stars to be successful?
NO
It takes a team with a winning mentality that truly thinks that all is in won even before the match begins and you are 2-3 up.
It takes a team that from minute one run their socks of their feet.
It takes players that gives everything for the team and the team colleagues.

Whilst I agree with you, you are forgetting that the competition for CL places in England is a lot more competitive. Celtic wouldn't even make the premiership with their current team.

As I mentioned in the SB thread:

If this happens my guess would be that the 23+ was agreed upon in advance between the clubs and this last week or two was just a charade to get WBA fans on the side of their management. They'll accept this 3rd bid and not disclose the amount, while it will only end up being 1MM more than the last disclosed bid, leaving the WBA fanbase to speculate on the actual amount (I heard they went up to 27MM!) and say what a great job their owner did in fleecing Levy, when in actuality this was the plan between Levy and Pearce all along.
I think this could be happening and we can't rule it out, but it's difficult to tell if it is all a show or not. Regardless, we do seem determined to get him so I think we will meet the asking price providing it's reasonable enough.

Blimey!! Didn't realise we are offering £22m and a bag of M&M's!! That should clinch it. :)

Jeez it's like no club has ever sold one of its players. This doesn't happen round the world. They get a good offer and the player wants to join. That's all the fans need to know and most accept that. This whole conspiracy for a west brom player wanting to move is wrong

 • Actually wouldn't be surprised if the bid that gets accepted is for an undisclosed amount.

I agree. I don't believe their position is strong and I think levy knows it. I would be fucking amazed if he would agree to more than 18m, certainly up front before add-ons.

I reckon all this talk of 20+ is WBA bullshit for their punters.

We have supposedly signed a lot of players for less than the media thought, because of add-on clauses that were never activated. Soldado, Bale, Bent. Quite possibly Lamela (was at least 30m Euros not £, even I'd we have paid 30m)

I reckon that this has been all but done for a while (SB). It's just sorting out the finer points and Levy getting the best deal he can. They're selling him to us, it's just a case of how.
I'm just concerned that it'll be another case of excuses when the quality ones get away and we're left with a Saha and a Nelson as the incomings at the end of the window.
I'm optimistic that we'll get a Dempsey and a Sigurdsson. Sigurdsson did play CM for Tim after all, so that's clear what we need.

Agree. One can't blame WBA for wanting their supporters to feel that they got a cracking deal... bit like us with Bale (obviously hugely different amounts, but same principle).

Either Pearce and Levy have colluded to create an image of WBA winning the "can't keep a player but get the best deal" game or Levys poker hand has been displayed far too often and his lost the chance to bluff

I'm worried for this deal personally

Or there's a lot of bullshit floating around about how much is being offered etc. Remember Soldado supposed 26m that turned out to be about 13m plus add-ons.

It's fkin mental in here lately. This is supposedly the place to discuss ITK, you know info supplied in good faith, without reward and for our entertainment, enlightenment, whatever.
If my understanding of this is correct this is not the place for reading the ITK and then throwing down your own totally contradictory opinions or those of fucktards on twitter/ the net/ media outlets.
Lets face it without the insight provided by the ITK guys we would be as ill informed as we were back in the day seeing clubcall flashing at us on teletext (I know some of you were around to remember this!!) and seeing us signing Rivaldo etc.

I can't believe we'd pay more than £18m (and in instalments), with maybe some ridiculous clauses which will take it to £22m or so, if we were to win the league, win the CL etc. Basically a meaningless headline figure to salve the pride of the West Brom chairman. Anyway, SB isn't worth £23m, to sign him for that would make a mockery of our approach to this TW.

This won't be popular, but I'm going to post it as it's bugging me.

I genuinely find it staggering that in a year where we've supposedly signed up a guy to help us reshape our player targeting and acquisition we are about to spend £20m+ on Saido Berahino. A perfectly decent, and somewhat promising Premier League youngster.

A bit of contrast...

Swansea spent £4m on Jefferson Montero.

Stoke spent £4m on Mame Biram Diouf.

Leicester spent less than 1 million on Mahrez.

If we signed all 3 of those tomorrow I'd go and dance in the street with joy and would be genuinely excited about watching us play this season.

I really don't care about big names. I want us to get the players the manager needs, of course, but since Modric was signed we have shown an appalling ability to scout and sign promising, exciting attacking players that don't cost the earth (Eriksen aside).

We don't seem to use a scouting network to 'box smart'.

We either end up 'trying' for players we cannot afford or just pay over the odds for someone from a middling EPL team (leaving us with no more money to improve in other areas we are lacking).

I'm really disappointed (so far) to see that things have not changed in this regard this summer. I thought it would finally be the summer where we'd find a new Berbatov-style attacking player to get us up off our seats.

You do realise we signed the scout who identified Mahrez for Leicester..?

I didn't, no.

When's he back from his summer hols? Daniel doesn't know his computer's password and it's getting kinda urgent...
I think the last thing we needed was to add a load of kids from all over the world this summer. We've got a young squad, Poch is clearly looking to add some players who know the league while the the reshape continues.

Having said that N'Jie is clearly a new scouting network signing. Let's see how he does...

We require a players that have a better ability currently. When Leicester signed Mahrez, they were in the championship and last season he only got 4 goals and 3 assists. If we signed a player of Mahrez's ability when Leicester signed him, he wouldn't have gotten the game time to develop. N'jie is the same age as Mahrez was when Leicester signed him and had 7 goals and 8 assists in Ligue 1 compared to Mahrez's 2 goals and 5 assists in similar mins in Ligue 2. Maybe the same scout found both?
