The fact we did'nt throw it away today after Everton upped their game just shows how far this young squad have come under Poch already.

Can remember far too many games like this where we would not even have got a point.

I thought we did throw it away, well control of the game if not the result. From the start of the second half a few more errors crept in as we tried to force it too much and didn't build spells of pressure. Everton then gave up trying to battle us for 'control' of the ball and wanted it to get end-to-end and open. Deulofeu, Lukaku and Barkley didn't track back. Putting on Son and Chadli were poor subs (especially considering who went off) and aided Everton's objective.

We lost a bit of precision, and definitely a lot of patience.

I think we need to put into perspective of this game.. this was one of the few games we played with so much energy and yet had to defend the same coming from the opponent..

we are fit, but such games will take a toll.. in fact we are probably so fit to be able to possess so much possession and remained concentrated to guard against counters.. and nobody shall need reminding that we had one beast in that Lukaku who has been so prolific this season, coupled with Delofeu who was a nuisance after coming on.. that made Everton counters so easy.. pass forward to these two guys and they can create something..

the threats were real at some point.. and no one in white shirt gambled at all.. as much as possible, all of them came back to do their defending duties.. I would not be surprised to see a list of our players covering the most distances in this game.. Kane was not the only one knackered I am sure.. the season is not wearing him off yet.. Ozil will IMO..

Everton IMO had less to lose than us, hence they became less fearful than compared to the 1st half.. credit to them, that worked.. they really had Lukaku and Delofeu to thank for in driving us down a couple knots.. and talked about Delofeu, giving him so much space was the biggest let off for me in this game.. what a threat he was..

1 point against them was not bad.. afterall, tactically for me, we lost out in the 2nd half.. but given the age of this team and their desire to outscore the opponent without losing concentration to defend till the final whistle wins it for me.. crucial lessons to learn which Poch will right them.. still 4th!
Good post and I agree.

Blimey - did Tommy Carroll sleep with everyone's mothers? Played well for the most part, pressed and tackled well first half. Got his head up and passed neatly. Pogba he ain't but played a serviceable game against good opposition and tired at the end like most.

Made less mistakes than Son and Chadli despite playing 60 minutes more. Fuck me, some people just have to have a scapegoat.

Pretty pleased with that as I thought we did well not to concede in the second half. Excellent concentration from the whole defensive unit.

10/12 points over Christmas is not too shabby at all. My only real concern was just how knackered Harry looked.

I think its worth pointing out that once again the "impartial" fixture generator screwed us over when theu gave us the pleasure of playing 3 out of the 4 Christmas games away from home. The fact that we've come away with 10 points is in my opinion nothing short of miraculous. Looking at the games yesterday you could see that the Christmas period had really taken its toll on a number of teams, Arsenals laboured win of a shite Newcastle speaks volumes.

Take the point, move on, rest the entire first team in the cup game and go and beat those cocky little upstarts in the league.

Best form over the Christmas period.

Nice.

Thought today was a strong argument to strengthen with another striker though. Kano looked leggy to say the least.

I thought Besic was outstanding after he came on. Proper tenacious semi-dirty fecker who could cause us problems with his passing too. Helped them immensely in the final half hour and more influential than Deulofeu was, although you can tell that Deulofeu and Lukaku have a very special kind of understanding.

How we did not kill the game in the first half I don't know, but during those final five minutes I was just willing the ref to blow for time. 10/12 since Newcastle is an excellent return.

I felt we were fantastic first half in terms of control and said to my mate at half time that this was the best I had seen Spurs play.

Second half we were tired I felt, the subs were not the best.

I think the problem is mainly multiple "announcements" about how badly he played that either providing no supporting argument or quote false facts, such as that he "passes backwards all the time".

And there are quite a few posts that say "Carroll is shit". Personally, I think there we could benefit from an algorithm on this site that automatically applies a ban to anyone who posts that a Spurs player "is shit" instead of making an actual comment about his performance.

But two pages on a match day thread would be pretty boring David?

Now its time we reduce the deficit with the scum. We have 2 home games and they have 2 away games against Liverpool and Stoke

I think the loss of precision and patience in the 2nd half was mainly down to frustration from a very young squad, especially after our excellent 1st half, which only saw us going in at half time level .

Also think that Martinez deserves a fair bit if credit for his half time team talk and second half substitutions.

You could substitute the name Son for Lamela in his first two seasons though couldn't you? Poch has said time and again how long it takes players coming to a new culture to change.

Cut him some slack for fucks sake, he won us the game last week, is coming back from injury and is being eased back into this high tempo, high pressing team. He certainly didn't give the ball away any more than some players that started today.

To say he's no better than Townsend defies anyone's logic.

I didn't say he's 'no better than Townsend'. I said I was worried about him, and that I'm unsure as to which incarnation of Son is the real one. I think I'm justified in raising doubts about his recent performances. He's an attacking player who can't keep the ball and consistently makes poor decisions in the final third. He scored last week and has shown signs of being a good player, but that, and his lack of experience in the league, doesn't excuse him from balanced criticism.
