Nice post mate and I think that could be pretty close to the way Poch views it.

But for me it also highlights the problem of not having genuine cover for Kane and Dier, who have looked jaded recently. He's now recognized it but this has been a problem for some weeks now and I just think the nerves got to Poch and he got a bit overzealous with his prioritizing.

Its a pity because we needed a stronger midfield than the one we saw to have any chance of keeping the tie alive for the return leg.

But like you say, if it pushes our league performances upwards perhaps its best. And to be honest it probably will improve our performances.
I understand why say nerves got to Poch but I actually think the opposite, I think he would have felt pressure to play a stronger team but held firm to his strategy, the league is the priority.
People are saying we could have played Dier and rested him against Villa but maybe we will rest him against Villa and next Thursday too then we'll have him nicely refreshed for Bournemouth and the rest of the season, maybe Deli Alli as well.

Even though it was a poor side Poch put out tonight I think it shows we are not ready yet for the top sides in CL. Dortmund are a good side but not in the top 4 or 5 in Europe.[/QUOTE]

Quite possibly they are, depends whose opinion though - after Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern and maybe PSG they have a claim to be 4th

Poch looked shocked tonight he has done a great job for us but not only to Dortmund have the better players they also had better tactics and Poch did nothing to change the flow of the game..

The thing is we were embarrassed tonight how does a performance like that help the confidence of the squad.. We were setup to hang-on for 90 mins but lack of pace up front and weak centre midfield was disastrous.. BTW how much running did our players have to do tonight I really hope there is no knock on affect against Villa!! It`s never a good idea to get a beating even if the side is weakened..

Appreciate what you're saying, but newsflash - Although we've all go so used to totally dominating teams this season, we are not the finished article, far from it. And neither is poch the finished article. Tonight we've played one of the top European teams with a weakened side and you're saying 'looked shocked' and they had the better tactics. There will be games, and many more to come for as long as he's with us, particularly against top European opposition, that the team and poch will be tactically outclassed.

It's testament to poch that people are shocked when we are outclassed

Totally appreciate what you're saying, but not sure what you're basing that on. Mason deserves a start given his great performance vs Fiorentina in last Europa game in the 3-0 win. Carroll has been coming on in a lot of games, gets stick when he for me doesn't do too much wrong. Came on away at man city and we got the winner. But nobody would ever look at that.

BUT, if I was a midfielder lining up against Carroll and Mason I'm not sure I'm going to be too worried, so I get your point. But thinking Bentaleb deserves a start I don't agree with. For me been poor when he has played this season. And I don't know this at all so please don't have a go as I might be wrong, but he gives me the impression that he's got his contract and thinks he deserves to start. I can't imagine Nabil rocking up to training and thinking "right I'm gonna work my balls off to get in this side". Just my opinion

To start both of Mason and Carroll against one of the strongest teams in Europe - just mental. Both have done ok lately, but nothing more and while Bentaleb hasn't been great, he had to start alongside one of them in the middle, taken Dier out of the equation.

Bentaleb has much more about him for the type of game this was going to be than those two imo - All pretty irrelevant now though.

This is why we get fucked by not having a good enough backup DM and striker. We have relied to much on Dier and Kane already this season, and they both look knackered and could do with a rest.

Our squad is still not complete though. Im sure we will adress those position in the summer.
I agree but I wouldn't bank on re inforcements coming in at least not top players. I think it's academy they are banking on and that takes a long time.

Totally peed off with team selection and performance. That was the team that should be facing Villa and should went stronger tonight,I mean c'mon no disrespect to Onomah & Carroll who are good squad players sending them out away to Dortmund is not a message from the manager that we want to win this trophy.
Hate the way game as gone with top 4 being priority over a major trophy, don't get me wrong I will eat humble pie we go to win the league.Just really disappointed that few weeks ago we had 3 trophies to go for and it's down to one which I personally think we have blown as had our chances to go top last few games.
Rant over!

I'm not happy with the weakened team selection we named for tonight's game. But now that we've done that and effectively thrown the tie, I will be absolutely apoplectic if we don't follow through the logic and pick a weakened side for the home tie as well. Will be going beserk if we see a full strength side picked for the return leg at the Lane to try and hopelessly claw our way back into a tie that we've already thrown. League or bust now, please.

I disagree.
That side would walk this premier league.
Me too, even at our best it would have difficult. No one in the premier league has that energy and ability. They are quite similar to us in that respect, except they're next level. If were second what does that tell you?

I agree with most of your recent posts except for this. Both Mason and Carroll have shown so far they are a better than Bentaleb this season, all be it Bentaleb has had limited play. But his rare performances have shown that he is behind both Mason and Carroll in the pecking order. Its good in hindsight to say we should have played him

Its not hindsightt though mate, if you look at the team for Dortmund thread - he's in my team.

And its not just about a pecking order, its about getting the right blend and balance, Mason and Bentaleb played plenty last season, and to good affect. Bentaleb offers more industry and aggression than Carroll, I just think it wouldnt of left us so open and lightweight in the middle.

And I also think there wouldn't of been one Spurs fan out there who didn't raise a massive eyebrow when they saw our midfield tonight.

While I accept there are good points here. If our squad can't cope with strong opponents mid week, then we have no business being in the champions league.

I doubt Leicester fans are too disappointed with the lack of European football this season. If that comes across as a flippant remark, it isn't intended to. I just mean that if the reality is that our squad depth isn't strong enough to compete well in the league and Europe, it makes sense to prioritise the league if we're doing well in it.

The CL is a strange mix of regular minnows from one or two horse leagues that don't really need to worry about the extra matches, super power teams like Barca and Bayern who have squads filled with talent built to cope with the extra games, and teams like Arsenal that can do fairly well in both competitions, but not that well.

We're in the latter category, and would need to strengthen in certain areas just to get to the later rounds whilst continuing to compete in the league. However, the CL has extra motivation. Bigger financial rewards for the club and players for a start. It also, I'm sure, motivates players to do well in the league in order to taste CL football in the following season.

Only the very best teams can balance league and European football successfully, and we're not there yet. Tonight will be a distant memory if we finish in the top 3 (possibly even winning the Prem) and are facing big European games on a regular basis next season.

We're on the periphery, and we need to make CL qualification a regular achievement if we are to assemble a squad capable of fighting well on multiple fronts. As much as I loved our CL season under Redknapp, it could be argued that if he'd prioritised the league instead of going all out in every CL game, we'd be there already.

Well that was shit.

All I can say is, we better get 6 points in the next two league games

Would there have been a huge difference to dembeles fitness if he played the first 60 rather than the last 35? Negligible difference I would think. At least we then would've given ourselves a chance. That team selection was surrendering

This was always going to be a difficult game regardless of the team we put out, there is a reason they are so good at home. Reus is a world class talent and showed it tonight. They are very much a together team, like we are in the Premier League.

I am not too bothered by Pochs selection, if he believes some of the players need a rest then I fully support him. After all we had a poor game against West Ham and struggled against Arsenal. I think the important thing is that we get back to winning ways in the league because the season is far from over.

Also if that penalty was given the game could have gone a bit different but I think we just need to realise they are a very good team. It was a good experience for the younger players.

If turning into another Arsenal (aspiring to finish 4th every season) is the goal then fuck that. Trophies is what football is about to me. How times (and fans) have changed. For the worse in my opinion.
