I'm usually on the bandwagon for adding quality to the team but in the case of Gotze I'm not so sure. Especially if his salary is such that it might make some of our 'mainstays' dissatisfied. And if Liverpool are out of it (as appears to be the case) maybe we should be asking why - especially as they apparently have cash to spend and a coach who has worked with the player in the past. Maybe someone like Wijnaldum is the better bet.

I've been saying all summer I'd like Draxler (or Fekir) but I'd take a punt on Gotze, has played under two outstanding, work ethic managers, I'd rather not buy at all than buy Wijnaldum

The salary issue is (or should be) dependent on the type of player being brought in. I would think a squad member would have had a legitimate beef if Batshuayi came in on 140k/wk based only on promise, but Gotze is a young World Cup winner with a pretty big name. I don't think many in the squad would be upset if someone like that came in and was making more than them.

My posts in this thread aren't anti-Levy, just posted earlier to say that I think it's highly, highly unlikely that we will sign Gotze because IMO I don't think we would be willing to offer the kind of package that players of his reputation can command. Trix's responses gave me pause for thought, but I still can't see us willing to make the kind of financial commitment that gets a deal for as renowned a player as Gotze done. So much so that I'm down for £100 in the Transfer Pledges thread if we do sign Gotze this summer, with the pledge made based on the fact that I don't think I'll have to hand over the cash this summer.

I'll go £50 with you.

I like the look of Wijnaldum. And he scores. And he can play many roles for the team - wide or in the centre. I really am curious why Liverpool aren't keen. Gotze has worked with their coach before so is there a problem? Of course Gotze has a high profile and has done well in the past. He would certainly be a signing that shows intent. I'm just not certain that he would be right for us.

One player other player that looks very impressive is Paulo Dybala of Juventus. I'd prefer him to either Gotze or Wijnaldum.

It's a tough one to call without knowing the subtleties of how the various players and their agents think. And what agreements are already in place. That's where Daniel Levy really earns his salary - in determining what makes sense and what does not.

As soon as Kane's or Eriksen's agent got wind of it that would put Levy on the back foot in contract negotiations because the bar will have been raised. Every agent would be measuring their clients worth against Gotze's and wanting a rise accordingly. Ijust don't think the club is in a position to have multiple earners on such high contracts. We're still trying to build a new stadium.

Do you have a spare £70m?

Dybala is certainly an impressive player, isn't he? Perhaps even the Ideal player for us.

Of course getting him is another matter - in the realm of dreams probably. But dreams can come true.

A player (or two) and cash could tempt Juventus - especially if they need some cash now. Pogba may or may not leave this summer and that could be a factor.

Still, highly unlikely I'd say...

Bild is reporting that Dortmund is very close to finalizing a deal for Schurrle. I cannot see them signing both Schurrle and Gotze.

So....hmm..... interesting... :geek:

Draxler's performance against Utd last season was exactly what we need. There's been rumours of the goons being in for him so I hope we've asked about him. I'd imagine we'd get priced out.

I like the little I've seen of Fekir, surprised there have been no links for him anywhere.
