Standing still while rivals improve

I don't think we have stood still, we've already added two quality players in positions we needed to strengthen.

The main problem is that Kane, Ali and Eriksen are all out of form, any side would struggle to create and score with 3 such important attacking players struggling for form.
Any other 'TOP' side would have quality players in their squad to rotate players out of form.

So do we, it's just bad timing that those 3 have lost form at a time when Janssen is adjusting to the Premiership, Dembele is still suspended from last season and Son has just returned from the Olympics

Must admit I had high hopes for this window, only to be left a bit deflated. We've spent a month now, A MONTH, negotiating an £11m transfer, you have to ask wtf is going on sometimes.

Don't get me wrong, I'm fully aware of the need to be relatively frugal due to the stadium etc but when you see teams like Palace spunking £30m+ it does make you wonder. With the additional funds allocated to teams this season, and the money/attraction the CL brings, surely it wouldn't be too much to ask the board to go balls out the bath for one superstar? I know price isn't the be all and end all and I know we've been burnt before but I just hope that for the 2nd time running we aren't going to regret achieving the goal of CL football, only to allow it to be a fleeting visit once again because we didn't take advantage at the time

I feel your frustration but I think anyone hoping for a 30m+ signing with all that was going on with the stadium is going to be disappointed. I have seen the manager in lots of interviews say we need to be clever with how we spend. I have always taken this to mean we have to look for signings that can fit what we can afford right now. Lots of teams are spending right now, but they aren't building the stadium we are and long term we are going to reap the benefits of it. Don't get me wrong I'd love to see a top class player come in, but I am realistic about this point in our history.

We need to realise that the club is owned by ENIC with the key being the last two letters: IC - Investment Company. It exists to make a profit on its investment - you can work the rest out for yourselves

I dont know the exact amount , but we get a lot of money for being in the CL. That money should NOT be going into the stadium, as it wouldnt have been part of the original funding plan.

I think thats too simplistic, we have no idea of the finances or where all the money is coming from, if extra money is needed and so on. Overruns hidden costs. At this moment in the clubs history I personally never expected us to spend big.

I'm just looking into it now, even if we dont make it out of our CL group we are looking at somewhere between £25m-£30m gauranteed. That should be invested into the team.

Sure, but it's a balance - there is a class of player that we can realistically attract only while we're in the CL. We didn't capitalise on that the last time we were in it (Saha etc) and we obviously aren't capitalising on it this time either. Progress isn't linear: you have to make the most of opportunities when they arise.

Not only have we signed essentially two backups (VW and Jansen - and don't get me wrong, I think they are decent players), we are seemingly selling off most of our experienced non-defensive squad players, leaving us with unproven (in terms of the league) youngsters on the bench. Our expectations for squad development are so low now that we're delighted we've got TWO strikers!

Our lack of quality on the bench was so blatantly obvious that Poch waited till the 83rd min to make his first sub in Onomah, and that substitution was only because he wanted to run down the clock.

We seriously need at least 2 quality players, players that can come in and change the game; note I said quality not just some inexperienced youth player with potential. Although there is nothing wrong with that, but we need someone to hit the ground running and improve us immediately. We lack creativity, pace (aside from the wing backs), and someone with the ability to hold on to the ball like Dembele.

Almost all the top 5-6 teams aside from us have made significant investments to improve their squads and although I understand the financial pressures we are in given our circumstances, we must add a few players with proven ability. Otherwise we will simply be left behind.

Honestly I don't disagree but it is what it is, the stadium is probably the biggest thing in our history (certainly recent history). I think its simplistic when fans say well we have money set aside to cover this and that, when none of us know the ins and outs. Levy will be prudent (like him or loath him for that). Who knows maybe we will splash cash on a player, but I don't think so.

We need to strike while the iron is hot so to speak. Whilst it's simplistic to say just because everyone else is spending big, so should we, it's also kinda true. We are in an extremely fortunate and advantageous position right now but looking at the squads in the league I'd rank ours as 5th right now. We might not be here again any time soon. Wanyama and Janssen are hardly Nelson and Saha but a proper, proper "wow" attacking midfielder wouldn't go amiss, especially as that is an area where we historically struggle when playing defensive sides.

Left behind by who? we were never going to spend what the likes of United, City and the Chavs do. Not until we have the stadium. 3 games into the season we have not lost, even though we seem to have a fair few players out of form, is a bit early to say we are bing left behind.

Whilst I'd agree that it will be a monumental moment in the clubs history when the stadium is complete, it won't be that, that takes us to "the next level". Maybe 10 years ago. Gate receipts by all accounts aren't where the majority of cash flow in brought in by nowadays.

Arsenal have shown that having a new stadium doesn't necessarily mean that's the case.

I think today highlights this a little. Our rivals are buying players that go straight into their first 11 where as we are getting players to strengthen the second line.

If we are bit careful, we could be left behind!

Those with a lot of money are indeed spending it, true.

Apart from the Dembele factor, and not putting Trippier on the bench, today did highlight Pochs main fault line. When the am 3 ain't clicking, he is slow to trust others.

He's obviously hoping Eriksen plays himself back into some kind of form, when I felt we needed more pace to put their defence on the back foot. Josh earlier, or Son, for Christian would have been better.

When the CL kicks in he needs to rotate the 3 much more, and hope they allow our possession to be turned over far less threateningly than today...

I think players being out of form, multiples ones at the same time is our problem. But considering this, the start of the season is not the disaster people are making out. I think we just need a good performance to get us going. Confident it won't be long happening :)
