Where the hell did I say that he doesn't deserve a good contract?

The point is that the story is distorted bullshit that misrepresents the reality. The secondary point is that people don't read the story, they just go off on one, blurting out "my opinion", based on the headline, which does not reflect the story.

I didn't say anything about "my opinion". I usually don't. I generally post information and observations. "Opinions" are overrated.

But here is "my opinion": Alderweireld is the best footballer in our squad, arguably the best, most influential player in the entire Premiership, along with N'Golo Kante. If he wants an enhanced contract, he certainly deserves one, subject to negotiation.

But the newspaper story doesn't say anything about that. There is nothing to suggest that he "wants" anything. It's pure fabrication. So the whole subsequent discussion is pure bullshit, based on nothing.

The fact that people seem to be incapable of reading critically and comprehending the content seems a lot more important than "my opinion" about Alderweireld.

You disagreed with just about every post since the posting of this article, including my original post at the top. Just because you thought we didn't read (I did read the article) or that we couldn't read.

But you're the one who has jumped to conclusions and shown a lack of reading. I didn't ever say that you said he didn't deserve a good contract. You "disagreed" with my post meaning you had to disagree with one of those two points of my post, both of which were my own opinions.

Then you were talking about how you usually don't say blurt out your opinion based on the headline (I read the article and asserted opinions from points raised within the article) when I never actually said you asserted one.

But I am saying you are asserting one now - your opinion is that the story is "distorted bullshit that misrepresents reality." So either you are Toby Alderweireld, his missus, his mum, or the reporter himself; how else would you know that the story misrepresents reality? I do, however, agree with your opinion that the story, as with most stories nowadays, makes an assertion that the author appears to have come to based on connecting a few dots about the length of time remaining on Alderweireld's current contract, the fact that every other player (bar Lamela) has signed an extension except for him, and that his current pay does not align with his importance to the team ergo he should be paid like other leaders of the team.

I conclude that I wasted too much time responding to a person that only seeks to make himself look more intelligent than every other poster on this site.

So that's two mistakes?

I've always said Toby's a player who we can improve on, and quite frankly this isn't good enough. My thoughts are justified. Get in touch with Anthony Gardner and see if he's available for Burnley away.
Alton Thelwell may be a better option.

Has Toby put pen to paper yet? We have the best defender in the league and I hope he's with us for at least another 5 years

Amazing stat that the goal against Southampton was the first time in Toby's Premier League career that he's made a mistake that has led directly to a goal.

It's not true though. I distinctly remember him making mistakes last year that led to goals, and I'm pretty sure he gave a pen away last year didn't he ?

Yeah several people have pointed this out already. Never believe what you read. Fell down at the first fence, embarassingly

Only examples I can think of are the penalty he gave away against Stoke and perhaps Chelsea's 2nd goal at Stamford Bridge.

I think there were others too. I just can't remember exactly which games. Regardless, he's an outstanding CB, as is Vertonghen and contrary to the views of some, I think Dier has had a very decent season for a kid having his first full season as predominantly a CB in this league.

Ryan Giggs believes that Toby Alderweireld is the best defender in the Premier League following his sparkling displays for Tottenham this season.

The Belgium international has been a regular fixture in the Spurs team this season and has made 24 Premier League starts for Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

The 28-year-old’s solid displays at the back have helped Tottenham keep up the pressure on Premier League leaders Chelsea as Spurs look to catch the Blues before the season is out.

And former Manchester United star Giggs has explained just why he is such a big fan of the centre-back.

Placing him in his Premier League team of the season, Giggs told The Telegraph: “He is the best centre-back in the league when it comes to defending alone. Spurs have conceded fewer goals than any other team in the league.”

Alderweireld will be hoping to feature for Tottenham when the Lilywhites return to FA Cup action next weekend with a crunch clash against Chelsea at Wembley in the semi-finals.

Spurs are currently second in the Premier League table as they look to better their third-placed finish last term.

Amazing player. Need to get him tied down to a new contract as soon a possible. I think Verts has improved immensely alongside him and has actually been better than Toby this season.
