Always seemed brilliant and dynamic whenever I saw him play for Bayern which suggests to me that there must be problems behind the scenes if they are looking to unload him.

It's not behind the scenes. Google Douglas Costa attitude. He's complained to the press on a number of occasions regarding playing time and wages.

Regarding GF info on player valuations, I dont think we can expect to continue to find the 8-12mill bargains that we have done in the past.

40mill is the new 25mill, so if we dont keep up with player valuation to a point and I dont mean pay silly money, we may get left behind and only pick up the dregs that the other top teams dont want.

I dont think we can live in the past and we need to move with the current valuations, after all we got a shit load of TV money as well.

I dont expect us to shell out 40-50 mill on a house hold name but I also dont see any point is buying some one simply because they are cheap, or a bargain in the current environment. I dont think we can have it both ways.

Why not? Our best players were all bought "on the cheap". Toby, dele, dier, lloris, eriksen all under market value.
Stupid or fantastically rich clubs will throw money at buying players. Things will then settle down and we negotiate for the players we want at more reasonable prices.

Most clubs in europe will not compete with these valuations but will still get very good players that will strengthen them.
We have to be smart and (i know that this is anathema to many of our fans) patient.

Of course we bought them cheap, like I said, living in the past.

We wont pick up players of their quality for that price now in my opinion. Anyone we pick up for those prices will be a year or 2 from being our accepted level like Son and perhaps Jansen with the odd N'jie type flop.

If we want the depth we need to compete at UCL level and still be at out best in the PL, we may need more than one "household name" or we exit the UCL in the group stage as we did last season, and perhaps that all our goal is to slowly get to that stage over a period of years like we did with our first 11 in the PL.

We paid £11m for one of the signings of the season last summer who'd walk into any team in the league, pretty sure that's a bargain.

exactly, but do you really think we can do that another 3 or 4 times this TW, or do you think that with all the TV money around, we should expect to pay more ?

Wanyama was a real bargain, but we did sign him early and it seemed that the transfer prices went berserk after we'd signed him due to the TV money.

I don't think we have to spend big 3 or 4 times to improve, 1 player who was bought for cheap was enough last season.

It's a balancing act though. I think you have to weigh up all the pros and cons on a player regarding their price versus another player. Something, with the exception of deals like sissoko (which was so unlike us) we are usually good at.

I would say that the market we like to enter is that where the player has only a year or so left on their contract. We have taken this approach over recent summers and it has proved to pay dividends (e.g. Wanyama, chadli, Eriksen) and I expect us to continue to do so, although with the increase in price of the players the amount we pay will go up. It's how we pick up good players relatively cheaply and it's amazing other teams in England don't adopt this approach.

Based on the talk we're looking for value from our transfers, Barkley and Veltman both within the last year of contract look likely.

Ugh. This feels like Groundhog Day.

Discussed to death in the last several windows (just with different names/examples).

Any new discussion points? Anyone?

Not necessarily directly a given that we'll get Barkley on a cheap simply because he is in his last year of contract, IMO.

Both will depend on the amount of real interest in signing them. If both are available in Levy time then things might change. Barkley won't want a move to Liverpool so that leaves us, Arse, Chavski, City and UTD as a viable move. If they don't want him then it will get cheaper by the day as Everton won't want to lose him for nothing.

We actually don't know that. We can assume that to be the case, but we actually don't know at this point.
