Georgiou looks like a real player. Some other youngsters, far more hyped, have never shown as much in the first team as Georgiou showed in one half. Positive, aggressive and some end product. The game was worth watching just for him and can't believe I have never heard him mentioned before as a prospect
He was a good prospect until he got injured in 2015 and he played mainly on the RW then. He seemed to regress since his injury and struggled to perform well when stepping up to the U21s and got shifted back to LB, seemingly as he was having trouble effecting the game from the wing. He was our best player v Man Utd in the FA Youth cup that year (we ended up in the Semi's) but got injured before the next round.

Most youth watchers were shocked he was included in the squad on this tour, as he has been so poor in the last 18 months.

Lamela will make a perfectly serviceable second choice No. 10 if he ever gets fit.
Completely agree.

I think it's a huge risk to rely on his sketchy fitness though. Especially as he's supposedly not due back from the injury until October.

Agreed, I don't think we can place any reliance upon him either. I do think we'll have brought in Barkley by the end of the window, however.

KWP could've had the 90, he was holding his own as well as anyone and we know all about Davies down that side.

Vertonghen was very lead footed for the second game running, no better than CCV but far more immune to criticism it seems.

Dier looked half arsed, but worse, half hearted. Can't see how he'd be ahead of anyone in our side v Newcastle, defence or midfield, on this showing.

Dele and Kane both very rusty. Eriksen and Winks also a touch off.

Dembele fine, same for Toby, Trippier and the goalies.

Nkoudou and Georgiou both impressed, I've not seen Georgiou before but I hope to see more after that showing. Pace, fight, crossing ability, I didn't think we did wingers anymore.

Janssen took his goal well and was unlucky with the shot which hit the post, thankfully Winks tucked it away.

As a team we were disjointed, press was out of sync and high line was picked apart by Roma. Still, it is pre season, another match in the boots, that's what's important here.

How many individual mistakes were punished by opponents to a goal ?

Vertonghen - 0
CCV - 2 (if you think penalty was correct)

So, would say criticism is fair

You sure you haven't got these two mixed up? That was easily Toby's worst game in a Spurs shirt

I love Vertonghen but just because his mistakes weren't punished, doesn't mean he played well. I lost count of how many times Roma darted in behind him. Also, that doesn't mean I'm not criticising CCV, he was poor, I just think Vertonghen was no better.

As for Toby, I felt he was bound to get caught out when he was surrounded by the other two and Dier in front all performing so badly. Apart from their winner I think he did okay.

Anyway, onions.

I was at the game and want to give a shout out to Davies. Thought he looked good, his professionalism and aggression really stands out in these kind of games.

From what I have seen, I can't fault Vertonghen at all. Infact , I would go so far to say he has been the best CB in 2 games. Last season in PL, number of these over the top balls ended up offsides because back line always used to be in sync. If players got behind him, its not because of his faults - mostly down to the every changing back 4 in these games. Likes of CCV, KWP are new in these systems, so would take time be on same wavelength.

Just back from the match. Had to be about 75/25 Spurs fans, really great showing. Thought the supporter clubs behind the nets did a great job but definitely tough to sustain when the rest of the stadium isn't singing along and you're down a few goals.

Was impressed with all the youth guys tonight, especially Georgieu, who I thought played very well. Glad to see Winks back, and the rest of the squad had a good run out. Just a few poor plays (and a bad call) did us in but thought we were the better team.

Loved all the props I got on my Sandro shirt. Most obscure I saw were Lewis Holtby and Paulinho.

For those that attended, thanks for coming out!

Indeed. I remember being really excited about him a couple years ago, and then checking into the youth thread to ask how he was doing, and the reports were rather depressing. Glad to see him have a good performance tonight, and I hope it can be a boon for him. Glad to see that he took his rare chance, something which Poch obviously does not disregard.

As for my key thought on the game, and this has probably already been said in here, but this game tremendously showcased how vital Eriksen is to our system. Without him, the movement, orchestration, and cohesion through the middle was almost negligible. Hate to inflict any possible PTSD, but we looked like the AVB sides from 2013/14, albeit with better players.

Found myself disappointed to see this I must admit, as I had thought that we had transcended beyond one genuine focal point for creativity and cohesion. A player such as Winks has the ability to compensate, but in the higher positions we simply don't have a player capable of offering even close to a similar contribution. This isn't all negative though, as it still goes to show how blessed we are to (still) have Eriksen at the club.

Just saw some extended highlights. I didn't realise Jon Moss was officiating some of these games!

The players did; and I loved that about how we played in the second half. They wanted to win.

Never seen us so hungry in pre-season before. Absolutely loved that second half savage attitude.

Probably still pissed off about not winning the title still (like we saw against Leicester & hull), which is good news going into the season.
