So many thick footballers in this team, with Rashford and Ox among the thickest.

Also, is there a more technically limited midfield pairing than Henderson and Dier?

I feel so sorry for Kane and Dele. Outstanding footballers being wasted in what is probably the worst generation of England players in fuck knows how many years.

Henderson there with a perfectly weighted ball back to the opposition.

...and Rashford with a shot wider than Jupiter. When did we become so mediocre?

I'd stick Stones there. Worth a punt. Still no creative to stick next to him, though.

It's odd how many people are still ratty about the mediocre attacking football of the first 75 minutes. Southgate announced before the match that he was going to play his usual team in his usual formation, because they needed time to bed in together. That set of tactics was always going to be a bit conservative against Malta, but he stated his reason.

It's plain enough, from the evidence, as well as comments, that the plan was to keep things tight and then cash in when Malta tired. And that's what happened. We toiled for an hour, scored one goal, wore them down and then our quality strikers did what they do when energetic, technically-limited defenders tire, which is to score goals.

It wasn't especially enjoyable, but it was 4-0. People are acting as if the scoreline was a fluke. It wasn't. That's what happens when international strikers play against part-timers. Late goals.

It's not just the poor selections it's the lack of any cohesive tactical ethos. Forget the clueless and unimaginative play with the ball, what about the pressing and organisation without the ball, if you watch any of the last few games there is no trace of this having been worked on in training. Italy got there selection and shape wrong against Spain but there cohesion without the ball was so much more sophisticated. If England are going to be shit with the ball, the least they could do is be cohesive and hard working without it.

All this crap about playing with pride etc, England need to start playing with their brains not their pride.

I keep on and feel like I'm being a bully but Dier always seems to be half a second behind the pace, so many times he loses possession because he takes an age to play the ball.
