Well the reports from Brazilian media are that he 100% has his heart set on a move to Barca and they usually get it right when it comes to what Brazilian players want. Depends how much of a fight Liverpool make of it but I can't see them splurging all this cash without something coming there way. FSG would certainly be running at a risk if that's the case.
Sounds like he had the same agreement we had with Modric, stay this season and leave with our blessing in the summer

Buying a defender doesn't necessarily fix their defence. Klopp blames individual errors all the time but it's different individuals. Van Dijk is hardly perfect, I doubt he'd get into our defence for example, and for a world record fee he is nowhere near the best defender in the league, let alone the wider game. Their problems are not personnel, it's organisation and that is Klopp's fault. He bought Klavan, after all.

For now it's just a lot of money on an average-decent player but without organisation or a decent goalie, they are still going to be very strong going forward and dodgy at the back. If Coutinho is indeed going this January then it changes their attacking strength, too.

Well done to Liverpool. They've identified weaknesses in their squad and as a club have been decisive.. Same with the Naby Keita signing. What Liverpool is doing is building a squad to compete with City/United/Chelsea. I think they have done excellent business in their front 4 as well. Salah and Mane' being prime examples.

The cost would be offset possibly by the sale of Coutinho in any case. I have no doubt that their scouting network is/have identified his replacement too.

This is a big club mentality and a team that is determined to be at the top. No stupid transfer tactic of waiting for bargains to materialize... Waiting for other bigger clubs to do their busuness etc.

They literally have every intention of securing top 4 and winning trophies by having a quality Squad.

Nice fishing trip?

On what basis do you think that the club doesn't understand that the market has changed? You genuinely think they haven't realised?

It had changed last year and the year previous and we still finished above teams that had spent significantly more and that make significantly more than we do.

To say you detest our net spending culture is honestly a shocking statement. Really? Detest? Especially over a period where we are putting a shit ton of money into the club itself, to have one of the most attractive setups in the UK for years to come - something which can certainly attract players of the caliber we need.

Having the most amount of money doesn't fix all problems and teams around us are regularly throwing huge sums of money around without actually fixing anything. We have done that before with nothing to show for it so it clearly isn't the answer.

They were already let off failing FFP on a technicality once before, I doubt anything will happen to them even if they don't sell someone to cover the cost of Van Dijk.

Not sure what you implying... I guess one should not admire an opposition teams transfer business.... Would Salah/Mane' not improve our team?
Have they not strengthened their squad as a whole?

Forget what they paying for Vvd... The sale of Coutinho alone will take care of his price tag.

Whats so difficult to understand in that.

£180k a week apparently, madness.
I read the Guardian claiming "...a contract until 2023 worth in the region of £180,000-a-week.", which is suitably ambiguous. On a 5 and a half year contract, I can only see him being near that in the final year.

I doubt even City would have offered over £150k a week(Coutinho's wages, which looked very good until Barca swept into town).

Losing Coutinho and getting Van Dyk weakens them, imo. He's their major provider and gamechanger. I know Salah and Mane are both fine players, but they're not in the same class as PC.

Yes they payed much for VVD, but he will improve them and make it harder for us to pass them, even if only slightly.

No point in mocking them for spending much, as the truth is they can afford it.

Most importantly it will give them a confidence boost and renewed faith, sadly.

Disappointed... Was hoping Southampton would dig their heels in and let him rot in the reserves. Maybe their league form forced their hand... They are in a slump at the moment, close to the danger zone. Might be a different story If they were in the top half.

But Liverpool paid their price and they got their man.

Think he will improve them... If they get the player he was last season. It's possible that the will choke. He could be slightly lacking match sharpness and might not be as confident as he was. Liverpool also has a shaky defense. And at 75M, every mistake he makes is amplified. He is brought in as their "miracle" maker, the man who will fix their defense. While I agree, he is better then what they have.... Defending is still a team effort...

So here's hoping that they will still screw up in defence.

How FAB of Liverpool to spend £75m just to complete the Tracy Island five-a-side team

Scott Carson
Virgil Van Dijk
Alan Kennedy
Gordon Milne
John Barnes

It's a typically Klopp team too. Yeah they're fast, but there's no Brains in defence.

And I'd rather have Parker over any of that lot any day. Always guaranteed a Rolls Royce performance.

And buy Coutinho's replacement.. So that is clever business and im not sure why some in here scoff at that...
Read the thread title.
Why don't you start a 'Let's all suck off Liverpool' thread, I'm sure it'll be very popular.

You cant just 'buy Coutinhos replacement.'
Players like that are rare as fk.
Thats why Barcelona want him and not the replacement.
Losing your best player is NEVER good business not matter how you try and dress it up.
It also sends out the wrong message to those that are already there and those thinking of joining.

Why are you assuming all their signings are going to be brilliant?

Im not assuming... Mane' and Salah are brilliant. Vvd has been a quality defender. Keita is a top tier player. Sure they might get one or two wrong... But we no different.
