Exactly, why all the fuss?

It never hurts for fans and pundits to learn a little bit about the LOTG. The last 20 pages of this thread and the aftermath of the match shows that many fans and pundits don't understand some of the intricacies of the laws. This was simply a good teaching opportunity.

He was offside from the original through ball - the fact that Lovren touched it didn't make him onside from the original pass. And that touch didn't make it a 2nd phase of play, so presumably he should have been flagged.

And it was a great goal by Salah, but I'll maintain my overly-critical stance that Lloris was flat on the ground before he kicked it.
Being in offside position is not against the law of the game, only attempting to play the ball is. If Lovren attempts to play the ball, not just say block it, and touches the ball, then it is a new phase of play. This isn't really up for argument, in the laws of the game thats onside. Whether is should be is another conversation entirely.

Looking at the bigger picture, 4 points from these two games on Wednesday and Sunday which on paper were very tough assignments represents a very good return, after that Newport performance we could have buckled and I can safely predict that there would have been a few on here who were fearing two straight losses, had that happened we would have been eight points behind Liverpool and way off the the top 4. That didn't happen and we are still in with a shout.

To those on here who claimed we bottled it after missing the first penalty I would ask them whether they thought Liverpool bottled it. You could argue that having got what appeared to be the winner with two minutes left that they did, they should have shut up shop and seen the game out with a 2-1 win. Yes it was a poorly taken first penalty, there can be few who can argue it wasn't, Kane is not a robot and sometimes players miss when there is a long delay before a penalty has been taken, he won't be the first and he won't be the last, but you could equally argue that Kane showed some balls in stepping up barely 5 minutes later to atone for the error, again in front on a hostile Kop to snatch something back at the end.

One thing for sure, if it was Alli being brought down for that first penalty, the referee would definitely not have given it. Such is his reputation. Having said that, which player played the ball through to Kane for the penalty....Alli of course. He might act like a prat at times but in big games he often comes up with something.

Everyone might reasonably have thought that Kane was offside for the first penalty. It was only well after the final whistle that we found out what the big debate was about: Lovren touched the ball on the way through to Kane, playing him onside.

You could clearly hear the linesman telling the referee "if Lovren touched the ball he's not offside."

There are not disagreements on interpretations here. Every referee and assistant referee in the Premier League would say that Kane is not offside because Lovern deliberately played the ball (and it was not an attempt to make a save). They've all received the same instruction from FIFA/IFAB and UEFA. This exact type of situation has been pounded into my head by the US referee program (as instructed by FIFA/IFAB) over the past couple years. 100% not offside.

As I said I don't disagree. This was by the laws of the game the correct decision.

That doesn't change that there are many controversial decisions regarding the phases of play, and whether or not a player is or isn't active.

Bit late in the day but incredible match, absolutely love are starting 11 ,but in my opinion before game was like to see maybe sacrifice Son or Alli for Wanyama to start would been my choice just have extra midfield against dippers based on past results at anfield, Terrible slight error from Dier put on a plate. And like here we go again. In the end amazing wonder goal from Wanyama & Great pressure from us to get pens fantastic character from Harry 2nd pen Awesome!

Not sure it has been highlighted here but Lovren has his arm around Lamella at the point the scouse apologists claim Lamella was offside before the vvd assault.

Not that is matters two hoots.

If VVD played for Spurs and even attempted to make that tackle he'd get crucified! Shocking decision on his behalf but awarded us probably what we deserved! Think both sets of fans are gutted to not win but don't think either team deserved to lose! Big Vic HAS to start for me. Diers coming a bit of a liability and I don't think Dembele can play twice in a week!

All the back pages running with Van Dijk saying Kane dived.

At least with that and all the decisions it's papered over Dele's dive

Surely if Loren deliberately plays the ball miskick or not Harry Kane is onside but if he is off side then so the fuck is salash when dier plays him in in the second poxy minuit ???
