Wouldn't they? Sugar was paying Klinsmann more and that didn't do us that good. I say it was the Hoddle connection more than anything.

No they wouldn't chelsea were a tiny club (similar to west ham)Without his investment chelsea would not have been able to afford them unless hoddle could have got them for free.
Also remember at that time our wages and transfer fees were similar to arsenal and liverpools.

League position is always the first priority. As long as you finish in the top 4 a trophy is a bonus. We do deserve to win a trophy soon though.

That is down to the champions league and the money it brings. I hate it.

I dont know about that. I think playing 38 games between Aug and May and earning a place in the Champions League is a great reward. The Champions League is special and our wins at home against Real Madrid and Dormund or the draws away to Madrid and Juve are proof of that. I certainly dont envy Arsenal being in a cup final but not looking like qualifying for the Champions League. I do think we have a great chance to win the FA Cup and finish top 4 though so it should keep everyoe happy.

Still people will moan about something I'm sure :)

Before the champions league everyone would prefer to win the fa cup than finish 4th. It used to have parity with winning the league and was the biggest sporting event of the year. I hate what champions league has done to football, as much as sugar daddies it has distorted football creating mega clubs.

Arsenal have done both for many years.

Nice to Wilshere losing his shit at Wembley. I love a trophy or two but if we can maintain our set up and ethos for the next decade or more, I'd be more than happy.

I don't quite know what we're saying here to be honest and most elite clubs would read this and say "well there's Tottenham's mentality right there". Of course we can trust the process and we can see out club growing in stature season on season and I as a fan am very proud of it. Having said that if trophies don't mater, or even the prospect of winning something doesn't matter what are we progressing towards and ultimately what is the point of even progressing.

When Blanchflower said “The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It is nothing of the kind. The game is about glory, it is about doing things in style and with a flourish.”. I don't think he's saying it's ok just to be a stylish team, or that winning trophies doesn't matter, he is saying you must be successful and win trophies in the right way.

The article is just talking about how important trophies are when rating a manager.

When we bend over Real Madrid or outperform City/Utd/Chelsea over a season then obviously Pochettino deserves particular credit for achieving more with less.

The finances are so out of whack now that you can't rate managerial performance on the same parameters.

Top 4 place is a huge prize without a trophy in the modern game. There's money involved and everything that goes with that; The CL is where the world's best ply their trade. That's why there's a thread on every club forum which is a variation on "the race for a top 4 place".

But, it ain't enough for us as a club with our fanbase and our history. Sure, the Chels and City money changed the playing field in the last 15 years, but we haven't won an FA Cup since '91, a League title since '61. There are plenty of reasons for that which have been covered in other threads.

We're going in the right direction now and really hope we get a trophy. City bought a trophy yesterday. It won't be the same for us when we win one. I feel for the young fans, 'cause all I can say is winning the FA Cup in '81, what a high!, and '82, and the UEFA Cup in '84 were totally different experiences to ensuring a top 4 place these days.

We're in a good place right now, and yes, trophies still matter!

Dunno. When forest won the european cup their size compared to the madrids and milans was probably just as big as ours is to them today.
But yes there is massive inequality in football that needs to be dealt with.

If there is a process, then surely there is an aim and objective for that process to progress to? Wouldn't then the whole purpose be meeting that objective?

For how long though? There has to be a limit of this surely.

I would love the CL to just be the actual league champions of each country. If anything that would make it even more prestigious and would also put an end to the debate about whether 4th place finish is better than winning a domestic cup etc.

Will never happen though as it would make less money.

I'm the opposite. I think every team in the top division of their country should be entered. Make it like yhe fa cup. One leg knockout rounds. Smaller countries teams like malta etc... can enter in the first round with larger leagues coming in later.
Won't be any more games to win it than the champions league now.
