I was watching Dier pretty closely that half, he looks lost when defending at times, people just ghosting past him, he's just sort of jogging around pointing. I'm not as qualified as Poch or Southgate but I just don't see what he brings to the position, the issue England have is that the alternative is Henderson who fails to be anything better than average at any aspect of the game.

Shelvey is the obvious answer to the midfield conundrum in this quick passing England set up.

I thought stones was simultaneously the best and the worst player out there.
Vardy is such a dangerous player.
Dier is an interesting one, as England are playing 3 at the back and Italy only have 1 striker, so it's a bit strange and at times Dier is outnumbered.
Personally I thought he has done ok, but needs someone better next to him and preferably not a winger.
Ox has not completed any defensive duty, he is not a CM

The issue with England's midfield is that Dier is the only one playing...
Ox is not helping at all.
Its like they are lined up in a 3-3-4 - except Sterling is dropping deep to get the ball. Lingard is not helping defensively, nor is Ox - leaving Dier to shield the play.
I think Dier is doing a good job.

The weak link is Oxlade Chamberlain. Goes round in circles and doesn't seem to have any confidence. Maybe a massively overated player?
