Is it really that much different than if we sell Toby to Barça, and Barça turn around and sell Umtiti to Man United?

Big difference actually. Toby is proven PL class, while Umiti is not.

Mangala, Otamendi and Lindelof all flopped or below par despite being highly rated in other leagues.

Umtiti is 24, and not injury prone.

Toby is 29, and has played 43 of 76 league matches in the past two years.

I think the experience is balanced out by the injury risk...

Yes, Sterling to City.

I had forgotten about that to be fair. Although I’d argue that at the time Liverpool and City weren’t title rivals. I don’t think they were even in the top six.

I know we are miles behind Utd in terms of size of club, but I just feel we need to put a marker down at some point.

If Toby wants to go he can go abroad. If not, then he has to stay and if the clause eventually comes into play then so be it.

May not make the most pure business sense, but just the way I feel.

What like Liverpool who regularly sell their best players or Man United who had to sell Ronaldo ?

As I said ... Real and Barca are the exceptions!!! Every top player will see those two teams as the World’s club pinnacle.

I didn’t like it but had to accept Bale and Modric to Madrid (sure Ronaldo, Suarez, Coutinho the same) and Toby to Barca would be the same also.

Liverpool wouldn’t sell VVD to Utd so no way should we give them Alderweireld.
I hope Walker to City was a serious one off because he was a missing piece of their puzzle (maybe they could next the next guy) but we are undoubtably weaker without him.

As I said earlier, Liv weren’t even in the top six then. I doubt very much they would have sold Coutinho to City for example.

We’ve had solid ITK that there are big clubs abroad interested in Toby. If we have to accept a bit less than fair enough. I know we can’t force Toby to do anything, but we can make it very clear we aren’t in the business of strengthening Utd. I’d imagine if he wants out that much he’ll soon start evaluating other offers.

Dont get me wrong, it'd be fucking horrible to see Toby wearing a Man U shirt, but this is why we pay a guy who takes every single bit of emotion out of it and makes the right business decision for the club.
I hope he goes abroad, and if it were down to me he would...but can u imagine the state of our club right now if fans like us had been making the important decisions?

It will really be a bitter pill if he is sold to united, tough to accept that one.

Rather keep him and lose him on a free than MASSIVELY strengthen another manc club.

But we'll sell to where Toby wants unfortunately

Liverpool sold Sterling to Man City !

Again in my original post, very few example and more importantly, Liverpool are in the same position as ourselves, ie, still a long way behind the City as a result. Thank you for proving my point.
You cannot sell to a rival and expect to better them. Sterling another part of the City juggernaut this season.

At the time you ‘could’ also argue he was a key part of Liverpool moving forwards. Coutinho in the team Sturridge in form and they spent half the fee on Firminho.

Still, Even it wasn’t as much of a loss to Liverpool it was still City’s gain.

It just can’t happen if we want to close the gap.

They've got the 2nd best defence in the league...it really doesn't strengthen them that much.

Quality players step in and make a massive difference almost immediately.

Toby is better than Smalling, Jones, Bailly, lindeloff, stones, Otamendi, Kompany, Walker (at CB) Mangala .... anyone else I’ve missed out?

Him and Verts would walk into either Manchester team.

Let’s not forget Walker, Verts, Toby and Rose were absolutely incredible as a back four.

I wouldn't want to see him move to Utd though. We'd be strengthening a rival. Could be difficult to avoid though if we want Martial.

People have serious melt downs over reports. Wait til players have signed on the dotted line coming or leaving our club.

I always think it’s not about the player leaving that matters(part of football) it’s about who you replace them with. Tbf we already have Toby’s replacement playing week in week out. So tbh I think the next cb is Jans long term replacement.

Indeed Toby is miles the better defender than Umtiti imo
